As stated in the title, I went to some posts and comments that I had bookmarked for some media that I was trying to download. This was on my lemmy.world account. Turns out they’re gone. Doing some digging and found out this community was still up but wasn’t visible on lemmy.world. what happend?

.world pre-emptively blocked the piracy comms because they are ostensibly based in Germany and have to abide by EU rules re: promotion/discussion of copyright infringement.

Despite the fact that they were never even issued a warning for such an obscure internet forum, and plausible deniability because the content wasn’t even theirs, they thought it’s better be paranoid safe than sorry.

ETA: so now .world has a stricter and more draconian policy regarding the discussion of piracy than Reddit, a publically traded entity based in the US, which has even harsher copyright infringement laws.

When you do not have much of a bank account and you could easily be starting at tens of thousands in legal fees, it’s pretty easy to be unable to find them.

There is no legal risk because no one is sharing files. All they do is share information. They likely did it because they morally disagree. But then like go ahead and let companies do whatever they want, like gate games behind every single different OS. Bought SF6 for console and want to play it on PC? Go fuck yourself, buy it again. It’s wild that “piracy” is instantly bad yet whatever a company does is A-OK-USA.

admins banned a community, not one but three. this one, piracy at .ml and another one at db0. it’s likely that lw admins defederated from entire instance too

e: i think it happened in the past but now db0 is federated with lw

Can confirm, it’s only the piracy communities that are blocked, and we are still otherwise federated with lw. It’s not really a big problem as far as we are concerned, they can pick and choose whatever communities suit their instance. We will have lost some clicks and visibility from them, but at the end of the day, it’s not going to affect our share price lol.

I’m not sure what the semantics are. Maybe you defederate from an instance and block a community? But I’m just guessing. Semantics aside, if someone has an account at lemmy.world and tries to access the piracy community, they will not be successful.

I originally joined up to .world and offered to mod a few communities, cause whatevs I got free time. I saw a fellow mod outright nazi-ing about ( not “saying things I disagree with” but actual nazi fanboy-ing) so asked instance admin if he could be removed as a mod from said community we shared. It was a polite message, and I wasn’t gonna harp or bitch about it either way but I figured if he wasn’t removed I’d just leave (no way that’s not coming to a head sooner or later, yknow?) I was immediately banned from the entire instance without even a message or anything about it. Just outright immediately banned.

Sure, if that’s how hard you’re going to bat for nazis I don’t want to be here anyway. Shrug

Who would I have a screenshot from an account I had for like 2 weeks, what, two years ago now?

I get it, you’re being disingenuous and want to argue that its only Nazi if its from the Nazi region of Germany, otherwise it’s just sparkling fascism which is actually A-OK or that “um, ackhthually, nobody supports Nazis on the internet.”

Either way, you go dig through two years of mod logs or wtfever. Have fun.

I think a lot of mods do it because they just have a lack of control in their lives and have this unhealthy need for it (not because they have free time and want to actually help grow the sub). Basically like HOA/Strata. Those guys are literally there not to upkeep the houses and buildings but to just be tyrants telling others what to do. My last HOA was so angry when people would feed the local rabbits (bEcAuSe tHeY MuLtIpLy oUt oF CoNtRoL) that they were threatening fines. I had to get the actual property management involved and the guy I spoke had a tone that he to was so done with them. Basically said that it was illegal and he would talk to them lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if half of them were reddit mods.

They are both bad for different reasons.

Kbin has uncontrolled spam because the administrator, Ernest, likes to go AWOL for months on end and wants to do everything completely by himself. Currently, Kbin.social has been unreachable for 4-5 days - whether that’s because something legitimately broke or Ernest pulled the plug on things we don’t know because he actually hates communicating with people. He could gain so much more goodwill from the community if he just left a one sentence post saying “I am still alive, I am still updating things, be patient.”

Lemmy World sucks because the admins suck, the moderators suck, and the majority of the userbase don’t seem to be interested in creating quality content. Most of the people there are only there because their Reddit app doesn’t work anymore.

It’s 40% of the whole Lemmy userbase and activity. They’ve got their fair share of trolls but come on, the worst? Have you forgotten about redditors?

It’s hard to be the biggest, and I think their admins are doing a pretty good job.

They are something else. I joined them when I first heard of Lemmy. I also joined .ca and decided I don’t need two, so I closed my account. A month later I decided to join again for whatever reason and they a) didn’t accept temp emails (like jonny+lemmy@gmail.com) and b) had a lengthy application form where you had to go into detail about why you want to join. The lunacy of anyone even suggesting that, let alone implementing it, told me everything I needed to know. Like I guess you don’t want this place to succeed then.

Yeah they blocked it a few months ago. I don’t remember the specifics, but it seemed like a new mod/admin came into play and didn’t get the memo about Lemmy and trying to be more transparent and engaged with communities. Just poof

If that’s the case, I’d say the new mod did get the memo about Lemmy, and about the fediverse at large, and actually understood the legal risks involved in hosting this community.

Federation works by receiving and locally storing content from remote instances, which means any instance based in the USA is going to assume some significant legal risks by not banning this community.

It’s not that they’re refusing to let people look through a window into another, remote host. It’s that they’re refusing to host and serve that content from their own website.

i’ve noticed that LW replaces what i assume are some slurs in comments with removed it’s automated, there’s no indication that content was edited, nobody announced that, nothing appears in modlog so it must be done in db directly

that and they also prohibit use of vpns and tor

they also took suspiciously long to defederate exploding heads, compared to some leftist instance that i don’t remember now but that instance wasn’t an issue
