  • all the groups you cited? are they just toothless and making no impact because it happened way too late? or do they just have a very trash definition of what is intrusive? The major players still intrude all they like the second adblock isn’t there.

by the time ablock plus’s author tried to meet in a middleground advertising was already so far out of control that the users said “f that, no more” and most of us moved to ublock origin. these pricks need regulated into submission but it’ll never happen.

if it became reasonable, I’d turn off my blocking. ain’t gonna happen and we all know it no use pretending these companies are going to back off thier tactics.

  • there are sites where I WOULD HAVE whitelisted them from adblocking if they had not chosen to make them functionally unusable or not stop nag me me. take youtube. I never minded those ad breaks…but that constant box nagging me to try premium is not acceptable. And then they just had to keep ramping up the adds and are now being a big baby trying to wage war on adbocking. Result: no more youtube. ty for convincing me to not even visit anymore -slow clap- good job ahole.

and ever been to a fandom wiki? used to be named “wikia” so that people could confuse their brand with “wiki”. so many adds jammed into that thing browsers tend to choke if you aren’t adblocking.

I mean sure privacy is great to care about, but nobody even pretends to care about usability.

  • a lot of amazon sellers simply mark working pulls as “refubrished” when all they did was reformat or if you are lucky did a zero fill and check that the sectors weren’t bad.

I don’t trust reburbs that aren’t manufacturer refurbished on any site because its a huge difference in the testing and checking being done.

I do sometimes buy used drives, but I know what I am getting there vs “refurbished” - and there is usually a pricing difference which is why so many are dishonestly calling used drives refurbs.

you want to look at the sellers warranty policies. if if they actually have one besides amazons, the seller is confident in their own items longevity

  • Having trouble finding it now, but this is thier own post over on reddit (4 months old now)

How is it made? DuckDuckGo for Windows was built from the ground up by DuckDuckGo engineers with privacy, security, and simplicity front of mind. We are not forking Chromium (or anything else) and for web page rendering it calls the underlying operating system rendering API (in this case a Windows WebView2 call that utilizes the Blink rendering engine underneath). While this is the approach we’re taking now, that might change depending on the feedback we get from this round of testing. If there are changes to future versions, we will make that clear.

If you’ve signed up and are waiting for an invite, we appreciate your patience! We’re letting folks in gradually so that we can implement feedback as we go.

Love from the DuckDuckGo team 🦆

I’m actually less confident having read this…Isn’t webview2 exactly what edge and chrome do? I now regret opening my mouth.

  • Yeah we’re kinda on the same page there, its just intent and what it evolves into later down the road tend to drift apart over time. A down buttom isn’t inherantly bad, but it seems inevitably mossed used by a large portion of users. And right now lemmy is taking in a mass influx of refugees from a place that -already- had large numbers of users doing so.

I didn’t try lemmy till like a week before all reddits recent drama. I wish I had found this ages ago. I actually found this via github instead of reddit! But once thay drama happened I knew a lot of folks would be looking for a replacement.

Hopefully I’m not comimg off as concern trolling. Things have worked as is for lemmy for some time. Best case scenario is the former reddit users get used to lemmy’s kinder culture and no systems adapt from it.

I disagree on it meaning there is nothing to stop toxic behavior though. If somethings truly toxic it has -always- taken action beyond a simple downvote to excise.

  • my take: up only, no down, per-post only, no account. if someone is repeatedly a problem mods can show them the door.

karma systems have been around forever allegedly to decrease mod/admin workload managing users by having them “self moderate” and that has NEVER been the actual effect - they’ve only ever been an engagement metric for advertising and it didn’t matter positive or negative if people were angry downvoting they were still engaged. I’ve witnessed site after site add these systems and then the userbase turn into a toxic cesspool after. In almost 30 years I’ve only seen one roll back the change even partially. Their culture never fully recovered and its still dominated by people agitating to get attention and to one-up their perceived rivals.

Let reddit things die with reddit. Long live Lemmy.
