The great irony is they’re finally using the term correctly. To be “woke” means to be aware of, alert to, and concerned about social injustice and discrimination.

That is exactly what they don’t want in schools or shoved down their throats: basic human decency.

PC was used correctly too. Doesn’t word “woke” mean two diff iterent things to users supporting that and opposing? To these opposing it’s more clearly represented as “wokeism”, almost a religion that demands you obey it’s rules or be treated like a religious one heathen (as religions often do). To supporters it’s like you said - closer to “being aware of and concerned about social issues”.

Thats exactly how conservatives think though isn’t it? Its almost always some variation of: I don’t want YOUR group around MY group. They don’t seem to grasp the notion that a diverse group of people with diverse experiences and beliefs can come to the same conclusion about something so they turn it into an “ism”.

Nope. Right-wing ideology exists for one reason and one reason only - to protect power and privilege. We can’t leave reactionary politics behind because the people that benefit from it and are protected by it literally owns everything - including the violent goon squads.

Just because you look at a black and white map… Or red and blue… it doesn’t tell the whole story. Even in the strongest blue states there is still a significant portion of red voters, and vice versa. If you divide the country up you are dooming countless people to living in a less democratic society. Historically this has happened before, typically due to religion, and as far as I can tell, has never helped. It had bread extremism and regional instability which drags down everyone around you.

well, they’ve had euphemisms and dog whistles since forever, and the people who were direct with their bigotry are still direct with it. this could even be seen as a step back from outright bigotry, implying that some of these people are less comfortable expressing direct transphobia / racism / sexism with the understanding that they are in fact losing power

because being against equal rights for people especially women’s and LGBT rights is still extremely bigoted, especially if it’s because you’re upset at the loss of power over those groups, whether or not they see themselves as bigots

Yeah, there’s nothing said about being against in the comment you’re replying to. Just that changing the term to woke is not necessarily bad. Where did you take that from?

I think what Noodle was trying to say is that now they have a blanket term to hide behind instead of having to identify exactly why they are bigots.

For fuck’s sake, can this debate die already? It’s one those made up words that no-one agrees on the meaning of, so people with the exact same views about the real world will fight to the death over it, because they’re using completely different definitions of the word.

It used to just mean “progressive” with a positive connotation, then it got oversaturated and some progressives started using it to describe the kinds of people who fake having progressive ideals just to make themselves look good or sell shit. Then conservatives started using it to describe all progressives again, but this time with a negative connotation. Then some of those conservatives started using it to describe literally anything they don’t like.

The problem is that the meaning’s changed so fast that whatever meaning you’re using, chances are there’s someone around you who defines it differently, leading to a lot of pointless conflict that could be resolved if we just all agreed on a meaning, or stopped saying the fucking word.

ok but when someone says “Hollywood is too woke these days” or “Stop pushing your woke agenda on my children!” it’s not exactly a mystery as to what they really mean.

Its because certain types of people cant really accept that they lost control of the meaning of the “Woke” word thanks in a large part to their bs american culture wars. It kinda pisses me of since im not even from over there and when i use it i always get someone nagging me about the use of that word while trying to put a target on my comment since they default the idea that i belong to their enemy party even if i tell them that i dont but they dont care since most of this debacle ends up devolving into political tribalism thanks to your intentionally diviside media.

Now i really hate whataboutisms, specially arguing with one myself but i believe that no mater what the hell i write im gonna get sodomised to fuck and back so might as well go all in: If we pull out the word QUEER you can not denny its original negative connotation in its use to insult/discriminate people that expresed interest in same sex realtionships, particularilly men, but in modernity it has been reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ comunity and turned it around into being positive so much so that its now used to identify one self and its even in the acronynm LGBT/Q+ . Same for the gay word, and its original meanning was outside of the whole sexuality theme and meant happy i think.

And something similar is happening to the woke word, and it kinda is like the 2nd time it happens since it originally was really used to refer to being aware of discrimination towards african-americans, but it was slowly turned as a catch it all term for all social things and it was then used by others in a negative manner mostly to criticise the fake inclusion that was inserted into media with clear, manipulative, capitalistic, corporare ulterior motives and did it while sacrificing the quality of the media in question or its original message, and then the fucking nazis/religious nuts took it and fucked it all up by making it mean wathever they dont like.

So my clossing thoughts on thiss rant is that i hate this whole semantics debate and the whole amreican bs culture wars (thought it is fun to watch the fireworks go off in the comments about it) and thats all, rant over. Downvotes to the right.

Define “culture war bullshit”. Is it having minorities in Hollywood movies or is it complaining about The War On Christmas? Because if “The War On Christmas” is culture war bullshit, I do agree.

That being said, regardless of what you think “culture war bullshit” is, it’s very easier to disengage from it. Less effort then it takes to complain about it even.

The “less happy” bit is fundamentally “a single income used to be sufficient to support an entire family, but now we need two incomes”
