This is important. I dunno about scale, but backups. I started out hosting a chat room on a raspberry pi. It was a fun side project. But then, that became where my friends all hung out. That was the place, so it became important to me. And then the SD card got corrupted. I then moved on to a consumer laptop. It was way more stable, much faster. But if I messed up anything about the installation, I was hosed.

I very highly suggest using Proxmox, like you say, and setting up automatic backups. And occasionally transfer them to a hard drive. It doesn’t matter what kind of virtual CPUs or services you install, gedaliyah@lemmy.world, as long as you have a plan for when something you host becomes important to you and you lose it.

The problems I’ve had with my RPis have all revolved around the fragility of their SD storage. I got burned one too many times trying to host something important in my house with these things, just for them to get corrupted and lose everything. Backing up these systems was its own nightmare, which failed as much as it succeeded.

Fair, but the more people you have, with more diverse viewpoints, the harder it will be to get people to agree on what is hateful. And the more nuanced your laws, the harder it will be to agree on what is reasonable or even clear.

If the populace has a bigoted plurality, then they get to declare what is officially hateful. So yes, you’re right.

I put the onus on the collective citizenry, but there is no perfect solution in reality. There is a role for the state to play in protecting people, I just don’t think they should dip much into what speech is or isn’t allowed. The majority should rule in my opinion, but we have the job of maintaining a majority that isn’t regressive bigoted shitheads. It’s an eternal struggle, unfortunately.

You’re partly right. But it’s the job of the citizenry to stand up to this stuff, not the state. We can’t keep our heads down and hope it goes away on its own. We shouldn’t allow the state, with its monopoly on violence, to fight our social battles for us.

I dislike the idea of the state getting to start making decisions on what is “hateful”. And I’m disgusted we don’t have more people standing up and loudly declaring how wrong the hateful viewpoints are. It is our responsibility and we are failing.

It is a tempting proposition to let the state handle hateful speech, but we don’t have to look much further than Florida to see what happens when the shit side is in power and starts redefining what is “hateful”.

I’ve used ESET NOD32 for a long time. It costs money, but it’s relatively light weight, doesn’t get in the way of any of the gaming or video editing or programming work I do, and it has smacked my hand a few times clicking on risky links, blocking a few downloads (one or two, ever) and often blocking scam websites that attempt to run javascript crypto miners. Your experience may vary if you’re planning on using “rescued” media or applications. I don’t have have the full internet/devices subscription, just the one for personal computers that does the actual virus detection.

You are technically correct. I just also happen to believe in and advocate for the concept of free speech beyond what is strictly its role in government. You are absolutely allowed to do all those things as an individual. It’s part of your free speech rights. I think the world might be a little better in the long run if we valued the concept beyond its application to state sanctioned violence, though.

Because freedom of speech only needs to be invoked for distasteful speech. And what’s distasteful is subjective.

I’m pretty far left in my politics, and growing up in a very far right area of the country, I’m aware that the principal behind free speech is very important. The social pressure to fit in was bad enough on its own; I could only imagine how bad it would have been if they had ability to shut people up by force.

Everyone gets their rocks off dunking on rightoids being shitheels and hiding behind their freedom to be a shitheel. They rarely pause to think how it might be turned on them. Because newsflash, shitheelery is really fucking popular because humans are terrible. If your ideal form of governance and the distribution of rights therein depends on people being as “good” as you are, you’re going to have a bad time.

Not quite an answer to your question, but if you enjoy horror games but don’t want to be too spooked yourself, I highly recommend the OhItsRobinM channel on YouTube and Twitch. She plays horror games and is absolutely unphased. She makes them bearable to watch for me.

I’d highly recommend you start with a game engine like Godot. Very few studios, let alone individuals, code games from the ground up. Besides having lots of functions and libraries specifically designed to do the math required for games, these engines will have lots of tools that will be useful for performing all kinds of game-related work.

If you’re looking for a true challenge and really hate yourself, and you really want to go from scratch, you could write your own engine in C or C++. Again, this is a Bad Idea™.
