Steam runtime includes a lot of common static libraries that most games expect to be there. This means that older games will still work even though the wider OS might not have 32bit libs present.

This is a wild take. The politics of the game - to the extent that it exists at all - are skeptical about office desk jobs and large supermarket chains. It is even hard to even take those elements too seriously because they entire presentation is so whimsical.

Yeah it’s very good. Written in java so Android is a first class citizen but it runs well on desktop too.

A few personal recommendations here: Xonotic is the most engrossing quake clone I’ve ever played. The gameplay is fabulous and it would run on a potato. Definitely check it out if you like arena shooters.

Also people who bounced off FreeCiv for its somewhat dated mechanics (I believe it’s most similar to Civ 2 in terms of gameplay), might enjoy Unciv. It’s a FOSS porr of Civilization 5 and the last time I played it a few years back it appeared to be almost feature complete in terms of parity with its inspiration.

Lastly nethack is hard as nails and I’ve never been able to finish it. Good game though!

I remember playing the original java 8 version of this game back in 2011 when it was freely distributed. I was 17/18 at the time so felt I was slightly too old for it but I do remember the sensation of playing something which felt completely novel.

Kind of crazy how much gaming has changed since then while minecraft remains a java executable.

The UK press every year makes a huge song and dance in opinion pieces about getting rid of DST. However I’m always horrified to see that people want us to keep British Summer Time instead of Grenwich Mean Time. I understand that there are “longer evenings” in BST; however we literally invented GMT and coerced the rest of the world to adjust their times based on that. From the point of view of being constantly compatible with UTC and having more consistent business hours for international companies it makes more sense to me if we kept GMT.

Also the longer evenings thing can be achieved by simply staying up an hour later. It’s not exactly like an hour is being stolen from you when the times switch, the change of clocks are mainly pointless admin.

Lastly I read an article recently that described a correlation between the incidence of heart attacks and the clocks changing. The theory is that just slightly messing with people’s sleeping patterns can cause additional strain on the body.

Quite a lot of the people that donate money to camgirls/OnlyFans models have learning difficulties. If a common library like zlib is in a non-standard place or is not symlinked to a standard place then I’ve seen GOG games fail to launch. Steam’s vendoring approach makes supporting a variety of distros much easier.

One issue with developing for linux is that userspace isn’t consistent between repos. Steam has solved this by vendoring all of the most commonly used libraries like zlib or whatever.

Assuming the bug is in-game then this information would definitely be useful for developers.

IME it’s the older games which are easier to install and have better performance on linux.
