Your mileage may vary, but have you tried over the phone instead of video chat (if it’s an option where you live)? I felt exactly the same about video, but something about over the phone felt chill, I could just “chat with a friend” in my pajamas. Helped me a lot and neither my therapist or I ever actually saw each other.

But seriously, hard agree. I want a big, easy to open easy to access, metal box. With handles if it’s possible I’ll be using it for gigs etc.
rynzcycle@kbin.socialto Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•How Commute Culture Made American Cities Lifeless -- Yet There's Hope81·2 years agoI’m coming to the belief that sometime this is an overblown excuse. I’m sure it’s not true everywhere, but I just visited a friend in a medium sized (well under 100k people) Florida city, and spent a day going around by bus and foot, and it was great. Buses were reliable, air-conditioned, cheap, and traveled all the main routes, running about 18h a day, but they were barely used. Still loads of 6 lane roads, paved everything, massive parking lots, and more SUVs than I could count.
Even if you have a car for some trips, people in this city could easily reduce their usage, but they’ve become far too reliant on car culture. A trip to the store, 15 min walk, hop in the car. A trip downtown, 10min walk and 30min bus ride, nope… Car.
If we want more public transport, we need to encourage people use what exists when they can.
rynzcycle@kbin.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If there was an afterlife, how would it work?2·2 years agoThe Frisbeetarian concept actually comes from a George Carlin joke, but I genuinely thought it was one of the most beautiful afterlife concepts I’d heard so I choose to believe it. That our souls are still here, but also at rest.
rynzcycle@kbin.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If there was an afterlife, how would it work?6·2 years agoAs a practicing Frisbeetarian, I believe your soul lands on a roof and gets stuck there. You just get to watch as time and people pass by for all of time.
Different but related, I downloaded Gboard to my phone, but mostly use it when I’m practicing on Duolingo… I’ve been getting ads en Espanol. Success!

-Enter and go straight to produce
-Spend 20 minutes examining eggplants
-Walk up and down 5 aisles pausing exactly the square of the aisle number in seconds.
-Grab a box of tampons
-Grab what I need as quickly as possible
-Return tampons
-Checkout and leaveSomewhere a marketing team is spending hours trying to figure out how to improve the conversion rates for tampons and eggplants for customers in my demo.

I wonder if the arguement that “working in the office is important so that younger/newer employees can recieve mentorship” is just a theme and variation on the same thinking.

rynzcycle@kbin.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Has the time since the invention of agriculture been long enough for any evolutionary changes to occur, and if so, what are some of those changes?3·2 years agoYeah, exactly. From the article, it’s theorised that we got some tolerance early on, like ape ancestors, and then selected for higher tolerance along the way post agri. Interestingly, and somewhat intuitively, there are some papers examining the opposite now, that people in the last 200 years are evolving to lack the gene that allows us to processes acetaldehyde (drinking byproduct) specifically because too much drinking is harmful (and can harm reproduction).

Origins of Human Alcohol Consumption Revealed
One model for the evolution of alcohol consumption suggests that ethanol only entered the human diet after people began to store extra food, potentially after the advent of agriculture, and that humans subsequently developed ways to intentionally direct the fermentation of food about 9,000 years ago.
Omg, so much agreement here. I was raised in the states and have now lived abroad for just shy of 2 decades. In 2 weeks, my wife and I are moving back to the US and Arbys is top of my “homesick kitch things to do” list.
Is it crap, obviously, but I miss it so much. The super thin shaved, 40% water “beef”. The arbyque (sp?)and horsey sauce that taste of neither BBQ or horseradish.
The one thing I really miss, and I know won’t be the same, the prices. Something tells me 5 for $5 is long gone. But at any price I’m soooo looking forward to it.

rynzcycle@kbin.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Americans seem to support abortion access. Why do Republicans keep trying to block it anyway?9·2 years agoUnfortunately I do, much of my extended family is what I call consistent Catholic. They oppose the death sentence, are in favour of funding good education and social programs, and yet, somehow every election they vote R because the pope tells them too. The only silver linings are that I think most of them abstained rather than vote for Trump and that they all live in a hard Red state anyway so they probably won’t have much impact. Still drives me crazy though.
Edit: Apologies if my reference to the pope seemed flippant, I was falling asleep and probably didn’t word it well. I know that obviously not all Catholics think that the pope/church command a R vote (Biden) but my aforementioned family have explicitly said this. Not sure if its their local priest talking out of turn or if they are in a weird conservative echo chamber, but that’s what they’ve said. I don’t really follow Catholic things, so I never dug deeper.
rynzcycle@kbin.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it really a mass exodus? And is it really a mass exodus to lemmy?6·2 years agoI joined right around the blackout, and the amount of content, especially content I enjoy has increased considerably. Everytime I open the app there are new things to read, which definitely wasn’t the case a month ago.
So mass exodus, nah, even if every new user of Lemmy, Kbin and all the other alternatives left Reddit completely we’re a single digit percentage at most. But mass adoption, definitely. With the smaller user base pre-apiexit its much easier to notice all the new contributing users.

After 4 years lurking on Reddit, this is so much better already and improving rapidly.
Agree so much on HBO. We just moved to the US and got the “Max” subscription and we’re finding gem after gem, some of it a decade old. Like TV that rivals any great movie, amazing storytelling/directing/music/concepts. Still plenty of filler to sort through, but some genuine art in there.
