How about re-posting the blog entry in question?
FYI: it looks like Trump is going to win the popular vote on this one as well.
Would you like to bring this to https://nfl.community? I was thinking of having separate communities for highlights and memes as well.
How is that an answer to my question?
Oh, I guess I’ll bite…
If ads are not acceptable ever, please tell me how you think people should be supported.
Unless you are expecting people to just provide you free content forever, what do you suggest?
I honestly do not get it. Look at the pinned post: “Creating a new community is easy, but to get people on board, you need to create some content.”
Please, let’s not get into this habit of creating communities without having any clear purpose. It only makes things look even deader than they already are.
I use Sponsorblock, enjoy it, and promote it whenever appropriate… but do we really a whole community for that? What do you want to talk about it there?
You are choosing to ignore the rationale for the name:
“Best”, “Awesome”, “Aww” and any other suggestions that I’ve heard do not convey these ideas. And to me these ideas must be expressed. If you can come up with anything that can succinctly make these points across without resorting to porn/fetish analogies, then I will gladly consider them. But if you just want me to change it because it offends your sensibilities, then I am sorry but I will simply ignore you.
“Best Guitar Pics” is dull and completely unimaginative. It’s the “Microsoft Approach of Naming Products ™”; which does not allow itself to take any risks and ends up being soulless, corporate, empty. Or to use a more contemporary reference: it’s the type of slop that ChatGPT would produce if someone asked “suggest a name for a community for people to share pictures of guitars”.
Yeah, it’s a bit self-serving. Thing is, I could not think of other term to convey this idea as succinctly. Maybe “Fetish” would be better, but it would still carry sexual connotations.
The “implied perverse thrill” seems a bit of projection on your part, and the idea of “visually appealing/stimulating images that have no context and at best provide a simulacrum of interest in the object or activity” is a very good definition of porn.
Thank you! Fixed now.
There is also !carporn@sfw.community, if you want to join.
I usually share the opinion that making sexual references to everything is silly, but in the case for the communities that are based on Reddit’s “SFW Network”, it seems appropriate.
If you think about it, all these communities are just sharing visually stimulating images and are intended to be consumed without significant context. This is pretty much the definition of porn.
If anything, I kind like the idea of having a name in the community that reminds you that of you shouldn’t be spending too much time on…
Reddit kinda went downhill over the last decade
It’s not just Reddit. Civic debate has completely deteriorated with the rise of Social Media. It amplified everyone’s voices to the point that left drowning in a sea of noise.
LW’s demographic is too close to the average Redditor. If you want to have an honest attempt at a community that is not going to be taken over by immature Americans in their twenties who will do nothing but yell at each other: please consider creating the community outside of lemmy.world.
Use a more neutral instance (I’d recommend https://discuss.online) and be more strict about standards of quality discussion. Then you might have something interesting. Otherwise you will just end up with yet-another cesspool.
No flair. What you need is:
<post title> @community@instance
<line break>
<post body>
Edit: to those downvoting: If you think what I am saying is wrong, how about giving a better answer?
Here is a Mastodon Post and here is how it ended up in Lemmy (The NSFW tag was because I mistakenly tried to add the title as a content warning)
Basically, you need to sign up to fediverser and then add your community as a recommended alternative for the subreddit. Then you’ll be able to “apply” for the ambassador. Once approved, you will be able to see reddit posts and send invites to redditors to migrate.
The first step though is to have support for PieFed communities. Currently it only recognizes kbin/mbin and Lemmy. I’m pushing the update with this, so in about 30 minutes you’ll (hooefully) be able to do all that I mentioned.
Neat. Looks like I need to add support for piefed on Fediverser. Would you be interested in becoming an ambassador to help redditors migrate and to get content to bootstrap your community?
Isn’t it in your own browser history?
