  • I’m really rooting for SteamOS :D

More OS competition the better. As both a windows and Linux user I can tell you 100% Microsoft has been prioritizing data collection over productivity, ease of use and hardware longevity.

Their OS has become more cluttered and awkward than ever

It takes days to clear out all the pop-ups and disable all the things you don’t want. I find the ways of configuring networks and hardware is becoming more convoluted yet no more capable than window XP; nor any simpler.

To disable copilot AI assistant it took IT over a day to figure out. In our business we are legally not permitted to share client data with third parties for any reason. It required doing some obscure command line situation not documented outside of a forum post on Microsoft’s support forums. Same with installing without a Microsoft account and disabling one drive.

Unfortunately we also need to be able to use commercial software that isn’t supported under Linux and sometimes need more obscure software that is Windows only, so we are a bit stuck.

At home I use a couple Linux OSes on my workstation and servers. They are genuinely programmed to operate in as efficient and clean way as possible and I can build from there. It runs just as reliably on 15 year old hardware as it does on my latest rig. I also have a MacBook that runs really well, works seamlessly with my servers, offers the same terminal experience I have on my *nix workstations and never crashes.

*Nixes are more straight-forward, better documented and starts with most addons turned off. If you want, you can install an AI assistant. You certainly won’t have to choose to waste a day figuring out how to disable a pre-installed AI assistant or paying someone hundreds of dollars to disable it.

And I shouldn’t even start on how much a pain in the ass drive letters and fucking backslashes that need to be escaped/unescaped and translated to/from OS-X/*nix paths in data stores… And what the fuck they can’t get a proper sym-link implementation going?

They shoulda done what Apple did with OSX. Recognize OS-9 was saddled with too much complicated under-structure and start over with a clean, mature, standardized, optimized and extensible *nix. NT was a huge improvement over the OG windows, but it’s time for another refresh and what they got cooking with power Shell, Linux subsystem and their obsession with data collection and forcefeeding one cloud/copilot/accounts is not good.

Ah hell, you got me going. I’m ramblin again.

Point is, I’ve daily driven Win, OSX and *nix for decades. Hell, I started with MS-DOS 'cause Windows took too much space on my state-of-the-art 286 with 1 meg of RAM and have been a windows user for the majority of my life. Windows is the most convoluted and bloated and least secure of all the OSes. They’ve only kept their dominance through educating a generation of engineers on .net/direct-x, locking companies in with Office/outlook and promising corporations to spy on employees…

    …The end.

  • I second this.

I have a nextcloud instance on pi4 for personal use and love it.

It’s not good for live transcoding of video, but works great for calendars, file sharing, photo sharing and music streaming.

I have a 500 gig SSD for most stuff and a 6TB HDD for backups and archiving.

I use docker compose to map a folder called archive in my instance to the HDD.

  • This is quite nice in desert areas, but doesnt work well for areas like Florida where if you dont spend hours weeding or edging religiously, you’ll end up having to weedwhack your lawn because the grass and weeds have still grown, but now your mower has turned iinto a rock flinging machine with very dull blades

A yeard can be great space for kids to run and play, but still, fuck lawns for the most part. One basketball-court-sized lawn per couple blocks is plenty sufficient for kids. A soccerfield per 5 miles, and a major sports field per 10 miles…

Folks should let their yards be what the yards are in the wild.

In Florida, that means pine/oak forest with palm fronds. Maybe small grassy garden if folks want a spot to hang. But grass for the most part is shaded out by trees and covered by pine-straw and leaves.

Residential half-acre-plus fertilized lawns are stupid AF.

Maybe was cool in the 1950s when lawncare was a handy mode of wealth redistribution for a healthier economy, and no-one had thought of the negative environmnetal impacts.

Lawns used to be a big flex specifically because it took crazy labor to do; lords would show off how many gardeners they had under employ. Now folks are flexing in how they can kill everything including their wallets, free time, and planet

Push mowers are superior for small lawns.

Mowing lawnbots are the future for lawncare.

  • I second this. My space has a couple small but well established fruit trees that I adore and definitely dont want to remove. It took almost 2 years before I realised I couldnt get anything to grow because the fruit trees just choke them out before they could get established.

I’ve been using large pots, sometimes partially burried in the ground and it’s working out. Even though I find the fruit trees will send roots up into the pot, they dont get in there until the other plants can get established.

I plan this year on transplanting some flowers into the same space they occupy, but without the pot and we’ll see how they do now they’re well established in that volume of soil.

  • Shits hard, so don’t blame yourself. You aren’t defective.

Suicide is also a bad idea and you are going to regret it if you find you’ve put yourself in an unstoppable position. This is evidenced by people who miraculously survive their attempts.

Be brave and seek help. There is zero shame in this, regardless of what the media or social conditioning might say.

There are groups of people that meet regularly for all sorts of reasons. Attend the meeting you can find that most closely relates to your problem. If you don’t know what or where that is, I recommend starting with Alcoholics Anonymous. Even if Alchohol is not your problem, they will not turn you away, are likely to listen to anything you have to say and will help you find the group that is right for you.

If the AA group you’ve found is full of unhelpful weirdos (some are) find another one.

Late stage capitalism is very unhealthy for a lot of reasons and suicide is on the rise.

It may look like it from where you are, but you are not alone.

  • I was self hosting gitea. It’s great for small projects and all for well over a year…

But then my filesystem got corrupt and I really learned to appreciate not having to deal with physical infrastructure.

I have things backed up and all, but I’m short on time and it’s taken a week for me to find time to pull out the drive, pop it into another machine fsck it, pop it back into the server, see that even though the filesystem is repaired and mountable on my desktop, my Raspi cant boot at all. Kernel panics when trying to mount rootfs :( Then pull the drive back out and reburn a new image, copy home folders, yada yada

It’s a good thing my work doesnt depend on it.
