Not sure that’s how it works. The certification and the encryption are two different things. Though encryption certification does require the private keys to be uploaded to the CA, a bunch of internal encryption for these type of apps would not necessarily be certified by that or a CA in order for the encryption to be effective.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I beginning to see why tariffs are being slapped on aluminium now!
kingofras@lemmy.worldto Programming@programming.dev•Do not Interrupt Developers, Study Says116·17 days agoGood article, but it goes so much further than this. This is why a lot of passionate devs are nocturnal. Why the venn diagram overlap between devs and expensive noise cancelling headphones is massive. It is why lots of (voluntary) programming is procrastinated on, and ultimately simply kills a lot of software that could have been. Not to mention the software that is, could have a higher quality, leading to less frustrated users and less dead beat jobs in support.
So go on over and ask Derrek or Sheryl if they have that PDF that was sent to everyone.
Most devs have known this for decades, so let’s wait another 20 years before we get a study to confirm all that too.
Stop using discord. Use Matrix
kingofras@lemmy.worldto solarpunk memes@slrpnk.net•tell me your outlook on human nature and i tell you who you are621·2 months agoHumans can’t do anything but capitalism due to our need to differentiate from our peers and having massive egos that prevent us from truly sharing wealth. Mine is bigger than yours has been a thing for as long as we have history records.
We are the virus, because we uphold capitalism as the longest lasting form of “peace”time economy. Yes there are alternatives, but all of them would result in more peace on the one hand and gang-wars and multiple mass genocides on the other.
Earth is also a virus incubator. Eventually nature does its thing. Like right now, and then we have an extinction level event.
If we’re not the virus, then why is Gaia acting like it has a fever of at least +1.5ºC likely +3ºC in less than 20 years?
And that ego is also the reason why accepting responsibility is very hard.
Best we can do is using capitalism to create better alternatives like the way the cost of solar panels has made solar the cheapest energy faster than any other energy revolution.
kingofras@lemmy.worldto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•[No PHPun Intended] A Brief History of Web Development61·2 months agoWas not intended as programming language. The name literally stands for Hypertext PreProcessor. It was meant to be a script injector for HTML back when the internet was still fun.
Then it got out of hand and PHP didn’t evolve fast enough to be a web technology leader, but never ceded the position of old trusty workhorse, and still powers a significant part of websites.
kingofras@lemmy.worldto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Do you have documents to prove you are a US citizen? If not, here's how14·2 months agoLOL
You think it is about citizenship do you? That’s cute.
Just be white. That’s all. This is ethnic cleansing, and it will get a lot worse over the coming months.
Also, your elections were rigged. You’re living through a hostile takeover of your country. If election laws didn’t matter, and national security breaches didn’t put him in jail, you really think this has anything to do with legality?
They are just using the belief of the masses in law against themselves, the same way we all believe a dollar has “gold backing”.
The moment we stop believing, is the moment we will be free.
Edit: If you’ve wondered why everything looks like a coup since he got in, perhaps it is because it is one.

I’m not disagreeing with any of your other statements. The enshitification is real. However, let’s not put them in the Adobe camp just because they are selling ad metrics and open about it. That’s actually transparent and still only applies to people watching content with ads in it.
The overall Lifetime Plexpass user is completely not affected by this, so the entire first reaction to your post that it’s time to ditch Plex for some other platform is not really justified.
People who are using Plex for just selfhosting without using their free online streaming stuff are not affected by this at all.
But eventually yes, I’m sure capitalism will also kill Plex. But possibly our planet and entire civilisation before that.
kingofras@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex now want to SELL your personal dataEnglish1514·3 months agoOP is claiming Plex will now SELL your personal data.
Omitting that the user must provide consent, not like Firefox or Adobe just updates T&C and forces user agreement. OP’s title is upvote seeking, cherry picking to quote certain text which makes it seem like they leave the user no choice, and leaving out the part of the text that stipulates the user does have to consent prior to the sale of information.
Moreover, the sale of data seems to be in order to facilitate the ads they show in their free movie and tv content, and even then is still opt in. The ads aren’t, but the data sale isn’t.
For posterity the full OP at the time of this post
Plex now will SELL your personal data
Text:
I consent to Plex to: (i) sell certain personal information (hashed emails, advertising identifiers) to third-parties for advertising and marketing purposes; and (ii) store and/or access certain personal information (advertising identifiers, IP address, content being watched) on my device(s) and share that information with Plex’s advertising partners. This data is used to deliver personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development. Your consent applies to all devices on which you have Plex installed. You can withdraw your consent at any time in Account Settings or using this page.

kingofras@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex now want to SELL your personal dataEnglish3527·3 months agoEdit: OP update the title and has my support should they run for public office.
OP is posting misleading hyperbole
This from the Plex site, emphasis mine.
Consent
We take your privacy seriously. If you’d like more details on how we collect, use, and transfer your information, please review our Privacy Policy. Plex is able to provide free-to-watch movies, shows, and live TV by displaying a modest number of ads before and during playback. While it is not possible to opt-out of these ads, you do not have to consent to the selling and sharing of certain information.
We’re never going to get anywhere if people on these communities can’t act in good faith and share correct and information - not sensation. Change the OP or mods delete this misinformation.
ETA: shame on the 63 people who mindlessly upvote this crap without factchecking OP too.

Claude Sonnet 3.7 high level summary (though I recommend the entire report)
3 Key Points: “The Crisis Report - 103”
- Global ocean temperatures are rapidly rising, with 2023-2025 showing unprecedented warming despite La Nina conditions, potentially leading to +2°C of global warming between 2030-2045.
- The report claims this level of warming could cause catastrophic global food system collapse with agricultural outputs declining 14-20% per 1°C of warming.
- According to the report, these conditions could lead to mass starvation primarily in the Global South, with projections of 2+ billion deaths at +2°C warming and 4+ billion at +3°C warming.
