The middle ground (IMO) is local news that’s actionable. For me that means reading up on community meetings in my district, events involving local representatives, proposed zoning or street design changes, small-scale infrastructure projects, funding for schools and libraries, etc.

Ultimately these are things that will affect your quality of life much more directly than anything involving national politics, or whatever irrelevant topic cable news anchors want you to get whipped into a frenzy about.

The US has a pretty severe urban / rural divide in most of its states, but I don’t think it’s enough. You’d usually need a pretty clean split along territorial lines for that.

You could argue that China has devolved into a totalitarian state under Xi. There’s a lot of corruption surrounding the party’s Ministry of Railways, which has led to some perverse incentives to invest (possibly way too much) in HSR and urban metro networks across all of the country. And thanks to the extremely centralized power structure, you have a lot of standardized components used to roll out those networks, making construction cheaper and faster due to economies of scale.

Tldr; China’s rail infra is pretty great, especially when so many of its cities are very rough around the edges otherwise. That said, East Asia’s democracies (Taiwan, S. Korea and Japan) also have excellent transportation networks, so who knows.

I’d only set one up if it were fully open-source and self-hosted. It looks like there are a couple of options out there that meet those criteria (like Mycroft), but I haven’t looked into it enough yet.

Started having the same issue during covid lockdowns. What works for me now is:

• switching often between sitting and standing for work. Getting a sit-stand desk converter like this one really helped with that.
• pretty serious amounts of near-daily exercise (esp. swimming laps and strength training). This pays off in all kinds of ways beyond fixing back pain
• making sure to take enough breaks, even if that just means getting out for a 10-15 minute walk a couple of extra times per day.

I never really ‘got’ Twitter-style microblogging, and still don’t really get Mastodon for the same reason. But I could some use for it if I represented some kind of group or organization that needed to publish regular updates.

This is my neighborhood, so I apologize for not knowing about (or attending) this awful-looking meeting. Needless to say these obnoxious attendees are a loud minority that don’t represent the community.

Social media is a very specific type of product that (at least partially) tries to base itself on your ‘real’ social life.

Nothing against Bluetooth audio, either (it’s very nice to have as an extra option). The expectation should be support for both wired and wireless.

E-bikes work as a car replacement for short-to-medium distances, and it would be a huge net benefit to facilitate that shift for as many people as possible, in as many situations as possible. So to make that happen, you obviously also want to roll out safe, protected cycling networks in tandem with these subsidies.

How about just ignoring the whole concept? I.e., voting in individual threads to rank comments, and that’s it.
