  • I mean that’s my point. I’d trust Reddit more than some completely random dude to handle my data you know? Why wouldn’t I? At least with a centralized datamining piece of shit I know a part of what the data is used for and they’re not just stalking me waiting to murder me or something. Blindly sharing whatever with some rando who just comes up to you like “hey you want some privacy” is just fucking weird. Some random dude could be any weird fucked up person you know? Maybe I’m over/underthinking this, but sometimes all of this just seems weird.

  • Thanks for the thorough reply. I’m just wondering, in general, about privacy and shit. Like it’s a big talking point here, how lemmy is so much safer and privacy focused, but then there are these huge oversights regarding some things. Sure it’s great my shit isn’t being monetized for bullshit reasons and ends and ads, but, if all this kind of decentralized thing doesn’t come without it’s own problems. It’s fairly new territory for most people and people easily lull into a comfort you know?

I’m paranoid rambling, but thanks for the reply.

I don't remember anymore, it was over 10 years ago, it could be either. We retained copyright, naturally, but the rest was presented in a kind of roundabout way and we were just kind of told to sign so we could just go on with classes. It seemed fishy back then and now that I know more about things it seems even fishier and exploitative.

e: I have a vague memory that we might've been able to attend, just not use any school equipment, essentially rendering it impossible or useless to attend classes, because most people aren't gonna be able to buy their own professional camera, computer, the right software and hardware etc, because the school had demands on what kind of equipment and software you were allowed to use. Essentially forcing you to sign and use the schools equipment.

  • Why give a nazi the stage? Why raise their opinions there? The points are and have been expressed in a civil manner for at least a century.

“If a holocaust denialist expresses their opinion in a civil manner why not give their point of view more attention”

“If a pedophile expresses their opinion in a civil manner why not give their point of view more attention”

“If a rapist expresses their opinion in a civil manner why not give their point of view more attention”

“If a misogynist/misandrist expresses their opinion in a civil manner why not give their point of view attention”

If this is seriously an issue you have a dilemma with I have nothing further to say to you.

These kinds of points of view get enough attention as it is. No one needs to give them any more.

  • I see the whole system as kind of flawed, like. If I think some topic or post is total bullshit and frankly, wrong, I’m supposed to comment to disagree with it, driving it further up in activity. So let’s imagine a platform where everyone uses the system “how they’re supposed to” and there’s a post about blatant bullshit, supporting nazi ideology or some shit like that (exaggerated, but for a point) and it’s dressed in the clothes of a well-mannered, discussion provoking post, and it gets a billion comments all disagreeing and it gets to the most active posts just because of this. When if it was downvoted, it’d just be more ignored the more people disagree with it.

I get the intention behind the reasoning for it, but it just doesn’t work like that, because the whole system is flawed. The most active posts would be filled with thinly veiled and not so thinly veiled, even clever, ragebait and bullshit.

As much as I hate to see “tHe hIvEmInD” and brigaders flood posts and comments with actual, relevant conversation and takes, with this system we’re just gonna have to deal with it I guess.
