Even with good hardware, it was not optimized for performance in general. This was amplified by the fact they also marketed Vista as having a wide range of older hardware support, which resulted in many users upgrading from XP only to have their performance absolutely tank. I think there was even a lawsuit because of how they marketed some devices as, “Vista ready.”

Regardless, Vista was still better than Windows 8.

This is the correct interpretation and the crux of the matter in Valve’s view. Why should they be forced to allow other retailers to sell Steam keys at whatever price they want, effectively taking money out of Valve’s pockets, when it’s Steam providing all of the actual services for said key to function?

This should not be confused with gray market key resellers, by the way (e.g. G2A, Kinguin, etc) . Those aren’t the same as retailers like Fanatical or GreenManGaming.

There was another case in 2021 that originated this complaint and some of these plaintiffs in the 2024 case actually broke off from that one to start this one. We’ll see what evidence they actually end up bringing to court to argue their case and how legitimate it is. All I know, is this will likely end up with Valve stopping third-parties from selling steam keys entirely.

They’re only doing this because of the class action being brought against them. It’s cheaper to let this go to court than to try and settle tens of thousands of individual arbitrations. In fact, there are plenty of companies now reversing course and realizing how badly forcing arbitration can backfire.

Doesn’t that game require a massive amount of storage with all the expansions/add-ons installed? Doesn’t seem very Deck friendly, IMO. Especially for base model Decks. It’s one of the main reasons I don’t bother playing BG3 on it, either.

Edit: I just looked and can’t get a concise answer, seems like tons of players’ install size differs by notable margins. Official site says it needs roughly ~95GB plus another ~30GB during the install process (guessing for temp install files during decompression/compression). Meanwhile, some players report folder sizes ranging from ~97GB all the way up to ~150GB. Regardless, seems ~95GB is the bare minimum which is still a lot for even the 500GB Deck models. And there’s no way the game would run comfortably off an SD card.

And how much of those profits go to those workers? Let’s take a well known Marvel movie, the Avengers Endgame. It cost roughly $220 million to make. The total global box office for that movie is estimated around $2.8 billion. That’s ~$2.6 billion in profit. Please tell me how much of that went to the film crews and various film departments? Hell, a huge chunk of the budget cost probably went to the actors to begin with.

Anyway, my original point wasn’t even entirely around sticking it to the billionaires. Until laws are made to protect our ownership of digital licenses, I have zero problems with people pirating. Additionally, the majority of folks are going to be paying, so a minority of people–who typically have lower disposable income–pirating content are not destroying regular peoples’ livelihood, this has been proven for over two decades now.

Bottom line: Come down from your ivory tower and just let it rest. Regardless of what either of us says or believes, pirating will continue with or without us. You can disagree with it, which is fine, or you can justify it, which is also fine. It won’t change reality either way.

Defending multi-billion dollar corporations in this day and age is absolutely bizarre. And for the record, I rarely pirate these days. And even then, it’s for digital copies of physical content I already own. But I really don’t give a shit what others do, especially if they’re not hurting common folk. And if you truly think it’s okay not to fully own the digital licenses your purchase, then good for you for keeping those billionaire’s boots clean.

If you don’t understand why some folks pirate by this time, you never will. There are plenty of valid–and not-so-valid–reasons to pirate. If you actually care, just type the question into a search engine, there’s a plethora of well written articles on the subject.

Honestly, that’s a sign to me that your bank doesn’t take cybersecurity seriously and would possibly consider switching. Mine has amazing security as well as fraud detection. Sometimes it’ll even send me a text to verify a purchase if their software thinks it’s weird I got across town too quickly, though that’s pretty rare so it isn’t overly aggressive/inconvenient.

That was certainly a part of it, but think about why everyone was saying that. He really is old and it is abundantly clear he is struggling every day to remember and carry out basic tasks. Additionally, think about this: What would happen if Biden had gotten sick from the flu or something a few weeks before the election and died (which isn’t that far-fetched)? We’d have no time to mount another candidate and get them the national coverage needed to sway those swing voters. Biden stepping down is a good thing, both for his own health and to significantly reduce the risk of a freak incident occurring the closer we get to election day.

I get it, Kamala isn’t an excellent choice, but she already has national name recognition and is already experienced at that level. Most polls conducted in June and early July had her on almost even footing with Biden’s numbers, with a couple giving her an edge and some showing her slightly behind. However, those polls were conducted before a media blitz and country touring kicks off. I can easily see those numbers only increasing as her campaign’s momentum builds. Biden was already predicted to win the electoral college, and I suspect the same will occur with Kamala. I hope I’m right.

And lastly, I agree, we desperately need to get rid of First-past-the-post voting and move to Ranked Choice Voting. The current status quo of the two-party system has crippled our government for far, far too long. Luckily, more and more states have looked to switching to that system (with some already adopting it). Hopefully, that trend continues into the future.

They might have a BYOD policy at work where they remote into an azure desktop or something and then reinstalled Windows on their physical device. Who knows. But yeah, they still should have notified their security personnel at the very least before taking any further action, lol.

We started the project about 4 months ago now and have been doing it in chunks. It’s a lot more complicated than it seems at face value (migrating/recreating ACLs, removing stale content ahead of time, discovering some applications will not work with data on SPO such as CAD type apps, etc etc). I anticipate we’ll be complete in about another month at most.

OneDrive is literally built on fucked tech from the get go and Microsoft initially even pointed out in its online documentation that it is NOT a backup solution, but just a way to enable cloud sharing of documents to access them from anywhere. Their higher-ups decided to make it into something it was never originally intended to be, which is why it is constantly a disaster with people losing documents due to sync problems.

Sorry for the rant, I just fucking hate OneDrive with a deep passion due to the higher leadership at my work forcing us to shutdown our local file shares and making our entire org migrate all our data to SharePoint Online. It has been a miserable transition and I’m in charge of migrating over 100TB and tens of millions of files from over 30 departments. Let me just say SPO is NOT a fileshare solution, and despite me pointing this out countless times it has fallen on deaf ears. Everyone hates it and its limitations are insane (e.g. no more than 100,000 files per document library, 400 character limit for file paths including the base URL, etc). And on top of that all, we have warned customers countless times NOT to sync their OneDrives to any document library or they WILL have problems. Do they listen? Of fucking course they don’t. We’ve had endless tickets and the migration isn’t even complete yet.

Tldr; fuck OneDrive and fuck SharePoint Online.

Is there a big advantage to using Moonlight/Sunshine vs the built-in Steam remote play feature? I regularly stream from my desktop to my Steam Deck without too many issues, although sometimes I get weird minor problems (e.g. Banishers Ghosts of New Eden will be noticeably darker, Elden Ring will get random “flashes” where the screen kind of blinks for a split second from time to time). These issues are hardly a big deal for me, so I’m more curious than seeking a true alternative.

Our SSDs just have to be wiped but we still have to document and provide proof they were wiped and turned in. HDDs and tapes are a different story and a pain in the ass, though.

I’m super jealous. Whenever we decom servers at work, we’re required to fill out paperwork and provide proof that all HDDs and SSDs were properly destroyed (i.e. rendered completely unusable and wiped) and turned in to our disposal department. The servers themselves also have to be handed over to them. I’m not sure what they do with the servers, but I’m guessing they either repurpose them as emergency replacements for other sites that have hardware failures or they bulk sell them at auctions or something.

I won’t deny that mods extend their longevity. I’m just saying that there are plenty of gamers who are content with the vanilla games. Hell, Skyrim was an immediate success at launch, long before much of its mods came into existence. Same with Fallout 3 and 4. I’d argue the open world sandbox-esque design of the games are the main thing that give them longevity for the majority of players, similar to how tons of people still casually play any of the GTA games (and not just their online mode). Hell, most of the time when I see random social media posts for FO4, it’s the vanilla game with people just showing off their crazy settlement builds.
