Many years ago on reddit, you could get given gold. It gave you paid benefits. My comments earned me literally years worth of gold, and my karma was similarly increasing.

Then I came out as trans. Suddenly the gold stopped and my karma stagnated

That kind of bias is built in to the karma system. It doesn’t just punish shit takes, it also sidelines visible minorities

I’m a runner who cycle commutes to keep my fitness up. I never loved cycling, but I preferred it to the bus. I did over 20,000 kms (12,500 miles) over the years on my road bike, and basically never touched it outside of commuting.

Then I got an ebike. I’ve fallen in love with cycling now and cycle everywhere at the slightest excuse. I’m doing far more mileage, and riding for fun, and utility as well as commuting.

Isn’t it kinda pointless though? You can see the hub drive right there in the front wheel, which tells you it’s an electric bike. I don’t understand why you’d hide the battery and thus make it hard to replace/repair instead of just making the battery more aesthetically pleasing, given that you can’t hide the fact its an ebike

Yep, Iguazú. I likely felt it because my Spanish is not great, so even though I could make myself understood by Argentinians, the poor Brasilians stood no chance as I murdered Spanish in an attempt to communicate :)

I speak a little Spanish, but no Portuguese, and my time in Brazil right near the border with two Spanish speaking countries was a challenge, because most folks there didn’t speak Spanish despite the location.

Some folks do of course, but most people I encountered didn’t have any Spanish

It’s not a matter of “fixing” so much as things moving around. After bottom surgery, the vaginal canal sits between the prostate and the anal canal, so sensation to the prostate is reduced with anal sex. It’s not so much AMAB/AFAB as vaginal canal vs no vaginal canal. A person with a prostate and a vaginal canal doesn’t get as much pressure on the prostate from anal.

So, in its current form, lemmy sends federation packets in serial form. It can send them to multiple instances in parallel, but the feed between any two given instances is serial.

And serial means that the second packet doesn’t get sent until the first packet has been processed. Add in geographic latency, which is relevant at multiple steps of resolving any given AP packet, which adds to the per packet processing time, and now, lemmy.world is producing packets faster than it’s possible for a geographically remote instance to process them, no matter what hardware they’re running on.

The problem would be resolved with parallel sending, but that’s not currently a thing that lemmy allows for, and apparently, is not trivial to implement either.

Offline hours? Is that something that happens often enough to need a work around?

lemmy.world is so big that it breaks federation to geographically distant lemmy instances. Driving more users to it wouldn’t help anyone and defeats the purpose of decentralisation.

You shouldn’t be afraid of different orientations. Embrace difference!
