Evolution isn’t divine, it’s random mutation that generally benefits it’s current environment. Considering most of our evolutionary traits emerged thousands, if not millions, of years ago… I’d say we can safely conclude that a lot of our evolutionary instincts aren’t especially relevant to our current circumstances.
Part of it is identifying differences between discomforts. Feel a little hungry? No big deal.
Feel sharp stabbing pains? See a doctor, dummy.
Those, of course, being the only three options, completely independent of each other.
Only in that those with money tend to be older, as they’ve had longer to accumulate wealth.
Age is only a secondary consideration to money. Plenty of old people are getting just as squeezed as everyone else, just with less recourse.
It also helps to not have a brutal dictatorship in charge.

Humans are not in any way homogeneous, though. So, not only are people not necessarily all incapable of accepting criticism, those that are will have different reasons for it.

It’s not that now it’s bad… it’s that now it’s actually being addressed. Whereas before it was just something people would sweep under the rug as being distasteful, but not worthy of attention.

I’d say it has to do with increased support of controllers. It used to be really hit or miss whether a controller would even work on the computer, much less with games.
