  • I’ve had the cops called on me for taking my niece and nephew to the park a few blocks away from their house.

Nobody came to ask why I was there or which ones were mine.

Just two cops sneaking up behind me, grabbing my shoulders, hands on their guns demanding to know if I’m there with kids or I just like to fuck them.

My niece ended up calling her mother on their emergency phone and she sprinted down.

Never got an apology from anyone except my sister, who had nothing to apologize for.

I’ve had more amicable, but still very much confrontational encounters with people assuming I’m there for nefarious purposes.

I tend to avoid parks unless I’m with someone because of that.

  • I’m going out with a girl after work and we’re gonna play in the park.

(It’s my wife and I’ll be riding my bike while she tries to get used to inline skates again. We’re in our 30s.)

But for real I miss being able to just… Enjoy a playground. Go throw rocks at the creek with friends. Have sword battles with sticks we found while walking by the trees.

But if I do that, people call the cops because some old guy is clearly confused and wandering around…

  • How soon before people start getting offers to buy their lemmy accounts?

Once I hit 100k karma on reddit, I started getting clearly automated messages from brand new accounts offering to purchase my account for anywhere from a $25 roblox gift card to several hundred dollars.

And while I sure could have used that money, I used my old username on almost everything and wasn’t about to turn my username into a shill for a company.

Idk what the going rate is nowadays but 100k karma, started around my account being 6ish years old, filled with thousands of comments and dozens of posts stretching back to 2010/2011. That is how you properly troll.

But hey, if they want to make it easy to spot…

  • Oof. Honestly I’m surprised it was only three. At least you finally have a paper trail, if you’ve got any insurance that might cover it.

As for the ISP, there’s always the possibility of requesting assistance directly from them, but they probably have internal rules about handing info to non-law enforcement, regardless of the reason.

And if you’ve got some friends who don’t mind backup for intimidation, you could always show up at each workers door, politely introduce yourself and the reason for your appearance. If any of them immediately slam the door in your face or get defensive upon recognizing you (before you tell them why you’re there) then there’s a good chance they know you’re there because they took something.

Anecdote: this happened with my truck in 2019. Someone broke in and stole about $1500 worth of things from a really nice pair of binocs, to the 2000w inverter, and my hand-made bowie knife, and a couple small camping and fishing things. Had to threaten to call the only supervisor I know by name in the police department to get the guy to even take a report for my insurance. They didn’t bother following up with the woman who told me she saw the guy. A few weeks go by and I see someone fitting his description driving the described car, I follow for a bit and he went home. I parked the truck right up in front of the door, knocked, and as soon as he opened and looked past me to the truck he yelled “GET LOST OR I’LL FUCK YOU UP” and that was all I needed to call the cops. After about an hour of waiting someone showed up, talked to the guy, said “well he said he didn’t do it and we never called this woman for a description so we can’t be SURE”

Well lo and behold, a quick glance into his car showed the 2kw inverter under the dashboard, and I was positive I could see the rather distinct custom leather strap of the binoculars under the seat.

No idea who, but apparently someone smashed the guys window to steal a bunch of stuff out of it and they were kind enough to return my items. Crazy how they knew just where to leave them for me to find.

Best of luck in recovering it. Hopefully you get the quick and less… legally/morally ambiguous way.

  • A lot of people just go knee-jerk in the direction they want, not realizing they’re dragging everything along with them.

I would love for there to be a “fat bike” style that’s fairly standard across the industry, but there simply isn’t. I spend all day building bikes for various companies, and the only new things I see are ebikes, and a lot of those are simply hub motors and speed controllers crammed onto existing frames. That means the effective weight limit is even more reduced.

It’s going to be quite some time before the industry changes to heavier models simply because they don’t see it as profitable yet. Even if they tried to pivot today, it would be years before you see changes in your local stores.

I wasn’t reading through every comment, I just saw a bunch of people saying they want heavier bikes, but it didn’t seem like anyone was trying to suggest normal bikes stop being made. Heck, as far as I’m concerned “skinny person bikes” should always continue being made just for the same reason some people want “fat people bikes” today, so someone with an abnormal body type can ride comfortably, and safely.

The fact of the matter is, the industry will only go where the money is. And as sort of a logical conundrum, more fat people would hike if they had better bikes, but the bikes won’t show up until more fat people ride.

  • My highschool hasn’t seen a snow day in about 5 years, and we had several years where they had to extend the school year from so many snow days.

The lake nearby froze over solid enough when my dad was a teenager, he and his brothers would drive on the ice for fun donuts without worrying about the tires. It hasn’t frozen over since I was a child.

The summers of my childhood rarely topped 95, but now not only is that the new “average”, it’s gotten to 90s in the middle of winter multiple times in the last ten years.

Recently saw a thermometer over 100, which based on temperature records, that only happened a handful of times from 1900-2000.
