Part of it is that we don’t really know what level someone is on, if you see a guy in the garden staring at the pretty leaves for hours he just might be empty headed, or he could be Alan Turing working out one of the most fundamentally brilliant mathematics discoveres of the era.

We’re on our own hill of intelligence so it can be hard to tell if someone on a different one is smart or dumb

I think you’re selling freedom short, yeah convenience and momentum are hard to beat but Lemmy is where the open source Devs are and the first adopters, I think we’re gonna go see a lot of interesting things emerge here which will draw a lot of users into trying it out - especially if all the other social media sites are closing their doors to people without accounts from viewing information.

What Lemmy needs is it’s own version of place, not the same thing but things that are fun and novel and community building. The basic stuff is still getting finalized but as things get established we’ll see plenty of tools made to help moderation, to enable new features and useful ways of interacting with information. Hopefully some fun games and toys too.

I’ve got a lot of work to do on my main project at the moment but I’ve also got a lot of ideas for Lemmy stuff I want to play with when I’ve got the time, I’m sure theres a lot of other people cooking up ideas and watching things develop and stabilize waiting for the right time.

I don’t think advertising always has to be manipulation, it could just be making you aware of the advantages of a product. Though most adverts are nothing but lies and bullshit.

Yeah, personally I enjoy seeing adverts for things I think are dumb because it’s like a shitty game company is paying my favourite creators to amuse me and they’re doing it by collecting money from rubes that’d only be wasting their cash on something worse anyway.

A lot of it is very clearly an ego thing, they’re all saying ‘I’m smarter than most people who need to push the button and anyone smarter than me is also worse off…’ it’s the same thing people do with the age they were born ‘older generations don’t understand, newer generations have been ruined’

I think it’s partly because no one wants to admit if they were smarter then they’d make better choices because then there might be someone smarter who suggests that change their mind on something and that’s never going to happen.

Like all the comments ‘i know things are bad, if don’t want to understand how bad they are’ it’s inconceivable that they could understand their misthinking on a subject and change their opinion, they see it as any extra intelligence will just make them more sure they’re right.

Personally I’d hammer that button for a few days then spend some time trying to work out solutions to my problems and the world’s problems - if I can’t do it I’ll go back to the button until I’m able to
