I think job postings are better in indeed, but tbh >75% I’ve gotten in pretty much my whole 25+ year career has been through a recruiter. Dice.com used to be big for tech jobs back in the day but I’m not sure any more.

As a SSE, mostly I have recruiters hitting me up through linked in. This is also a really bad time. I’ve been back to work for about a month after 5 months of not finding anything. That’s the worst drought I’ve had in almost 15 years. Usually it’s < 1 month.

Be seriously prepared about cloud. It’s so anyone fucking wants right now. I’m a damn good Java/js developer, but I’m still learning the tech stack and I haven’t touched a line of code yet in this job. Everything has been configuration and pipelines. I feel more like devops than developer.

I would only note that for the vast majority of my experience these streams can only return up to a single match. Determinism isn’t really preserved by findFirst, either, unless the sort order is set up that way.

Finding the first Jim Jones in a table is no more reliable that finding any Jim Jones. But finding PersonId 13579 is deterministic whether you findFirst or findAny.

Perhaps you work in a different domain where your experience is different.

I try to prefer .findAny() over .findFirst() because it will perform better in some cases (it will have to resolve whether there are other matches and which one is actually first before it can terminate - more relevant for parallel streams I think. findAny short circuits that) but otherwise I like the first. I’d probably go with some sort of composed predicate for the second, to be able to easily add new criteria. But I could be over engineering.

I mostly just posted because I think not enough people are aware of the reasons to use findAny as a default unless findFirst is needed.

I have a separate modem from my WiFi, but I’d sell you mine that’s a couple of years old for $50 because I just upgraded to fiber a few months ago and it’s just sitting in my network corner. But if you want one with integrated WiFi, this isn’t.

Idk. Been doing it for nearly 20 years and before that I was doing IBM’s take on VBScript for another 10. So I have my own perspective there. I’ve only ever had to parse massive xmls when doing web apps, and for web backends I really only like Java and NodeJS.

But everyone is entitled to their own take. I would imagine there is a streaming parser in other languages as well.

I was on vyvanse for years. And I slept about probably 4 hours a night on average. I had to go to adderall. It doesn’t work as well, but it does work, and usually I can sleep.

Completely agree. It’s getting very close for consumer grade. I just fall in the niche of Linux-novice-prosumer. But fixing problems is how we learn more.

I think maybe it was when I started installing things other ways? Like there’s apt and snap and … one other thing I can’t remember. But not all the software I needed was available through the GUI.

So it could be that’s related to the breakage. Or maybe not, but that was my experience. If it’s working well for others that makes me happy because I’d like to be able to recommend Mint to some of the less demanding users I know.

I played with Fedora many years ago. That might be familiar enough to try again.

I’m a bit of a power user so if anyone can manage to break an immutable distribution, I probably can.

I’ve known for a while but Linux really isn’t newbie friendly. I’ve tried several times over the years. Most recently I tried Mint and within a week or two the GUI software update stopped working. I switched to Ubuntu because I have a little familiarity and quickly realized the only way to stay updated is apt. Firefox will work for a while and then have days where almost every tab is crashing constantly. Sometimes you can get a page to work with reload or two, other times not. So I installed chrome under protest as a backup. Mostly it doesn’t crash although sometimes it does the same thing as Firefox (but usually not at the same time). Those are really my only complaints at all.

I will say, though, that gaming has come a long way, especially with Steam. I don’t think SteamVR is there yet, but otherwise I haven’t found anything that wouldn’t run (but I play AAA on PS so I’m not really pushing it hard). I thought I was giving up gaming when I moved to Linux, but not at all.

I left a big partition free in the expectation of dual-booting windows, but I really haven’t had any reason to at all.

Flash and applets. Let’s just have a do over of the 90’s and early 00’s.
