I actually think the poor branding is part of why Mastodon is hard to spread. Can you picture anyone seriously saying they “tooted” something? Because I can’t.

This may be unhelpful, but I ended up port forwarding through my VPN. I seem to recall errors with UPnP and while my connection to slsk.net is still buggy, it works better now I’ve manually forwarded. I had already paid the extra $2 a month to my VPN for forwarding so that I could get better torrent performance, so.
Reddit video links do not open up a raw video file but instead a web page that loads the video/audio file in chunks. If you want a regular video file you have to download it with yt-dlp or similar. I wouldn’t be surprised if some apps include an embed solution, but most Lemmy websites and apps do not include embedding and simply link directly to the external page.
Reddit video player is terrible though and linking to it requires you to load their bloated New Reddit web pages. Most of us came here to get away from Reddit.
Nah, you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the girth and texture of a garden cucumber.
Well a good indicator is if I have to check the source code of a packaged program to understand what something does, the documentation is not good enough. And yes I’ve had to do this far too much.
I agree, but I don’t think images should be relied on as the primary communicator. I have seen far too many forums/websites/docs with broken images because the host went down. That and archivers are more likely to fail at saving images. Explain it using text and give a reference image to further display the point.
Logically speaking, I would sit with the wolf pack. Airline seatbelts are not made for wolves and I fully believe they would not be held by such paltry restraints. This leads me to the conclusion that my demise is not only certain, but an inevitability. With this in mind I would much rather be the first victim, for my death will be quicker while they are hungrier, and I shall save myself the mental trauma of seeing them devour the poor linux user before I reach my untimely end.
I’ve felt that the popular subreddits were on a decline ever since Reddit was featured in so many YouTube slop videos, but with time the effect of identity loss is becoming increasingly obvious. The crowd on there is not what it used to be. Gone is the desire for accurate information, meaningful comments, sources, and giving credit. Reddit is no longer a niche product but a mainstream one that my parents and “normie” friends know and it reflects in the lower quality content and user participation.
I have a bad habit of jumping into programming without a solid plan which results in lots of rewrites and wasted time. Funnily enough, describing to an AI how I want the code to work forces me to lay out a basic plan and get my thoughts in order which helps me make the final product immensely easier.
This doesn’t require AI, it just gave me an excuse to do it as a solo actor. I should really do it for more problems because I can wrap my head better thinking in human readable terms rather than thinking about what programming method to use.
Yes, they did. The Canadian flag represents all Canadians. The BC province flag may represent me more closely, but it doesn’t stop the Canada flag from doing the same. While some people will be happy they can represent themselves more accurately to real life, it also makes for more exclusive use cases. I think there’s an argument to be made for keeping things simple and broadly usable.
Might just be me but YAML is some of the least readable shit I’ve ever used.
Thanks for sharing!
Have you seen a good method/guide to prioritise release groups for anime? I looked into it but it was super confusing to me and didn’t beat just grabbing a nyaa rss feed.
Kick the streaming platform? All I know about Kick is the gambling, banned Twitch streamers, and the pseudo-Tate whackos like Adin Ross that seem to be supported by the platform. I am steering clear until they fix their reputation. If they fix it.
File format? mkv, so convenient. But media codec would be h265 any day. I find the video quality to file size to be perfect for most films and only have issues with it on the largest files and the lowest power hardware (Roku TV). For the movies I really love and rewatch I sometimes get h264 for the better visual quality. I tried some AV1 files and found the artifacts really ugly, but admittedly these were very small files. That and the lack of hardware decoding on most hardware is preventing me from migrating.
Saying PETA is representative of vegans is rather like using Antifa as an example of liberals, or Info Wars for conservatives.
I rode a prepaid plan like that for about 5 years, it’s honestly great. Everyone thought I was crazy when I said it cost me to text them lol but my cost was maybe ~$1/month. Now I’m on 50GB of data, but I travel almost constantly so it was finally worth it.
Depends what you mean by free, but in BC any of the lowest cost plans ($15/month) have unlimited SMS included with the plan. The only time I paid per text was on a pre-paid SIM.
Ignoring the rest of your points, I disagree on porn piracy. Not that I would know, being a good Christian ofc ofc, but that scene feels the most alive. If I want to find content from a certain site/person then it is generally a couple of searches away. No private trackers or special software needed. When I compare that to other scenes that require much harder to find websites, applications, etcetera… and it’s been that way every time I’ve checked. I don’t think it’s going anywhere soon.
