I guess that’s fair, very few games can pull off 100+ hours while still remaining compelling experiences.

Honestly, it just needs to be large enough to have decent activity; social media becomes garbage as soon as it goes ‘mainstream’.
Yeah, someone could make a Fediverse app that works with everything, but it’d have to be someone with a lot of time on their hands and enough acumen to make something that can put up a UI for all frontends that can compete with both Ivory and…well, whatever emerges as the big Lemmy/Kbin app.
I hate it. Rather than filling this place up with junk, we should have users post what they want to post.
Doesn’t even have to be original, really; just…no botspam.
It won’t be instant, but quite a few 3PA users will find it incredibly difficult (maybe even impossible) to make the switch to the official app; it’s just that bad. Hell, I can’t imagine using Reddit without the crutch Apollo provided.
No problem! Having these discussions is how we’ll find the perfect analogy for most potential users, and it’s gonna take some real convincing to get people off these centralized platforms and on Lemmy.
I basically use it to explain how accounts work: ‘It’s kinda like having a Gmail account. You have a Gmail address and can only login through Gmail or apps that support it, but you can send Emails to people with Yahoo accounts. Similarly, having a lemmy.world account will only let you login through lemmy.world, but you still have full interaction with lemmy.ml users, or even entirely different ‘platforms’ like Kbin.’
Sure, it’s extremely dumbed down and not entirely accurate, but it’s easy enough for people to relate to, and it puts them at ease about the whole ‘fediverse’ thing.
Perhaps. It’s worked well for me so far, though I can’t speak for others
I dunno, whenever I use the email analogy to explain the interoperability aspect, it makes people feel more at-ease with the whole ‘federation’ thing. Most people, after all, get email.
Honestly, the ‘email’ analogy is still the best one for most people. Takes less time too, which is important when most people have an attention span of less than a femtosecond.
…holy shit you’re a genius.
Wait, seriously?
Apollo for Lemmy or kbin, made by the same dev, would be absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, I think he’s given up on social media apps entirely.
Exactly. The more shit you throw into someone’s face, the more confused they will be. Give ‘em enough of a taste that they can see the positives, and let ‘em slowly work through the quirks as they find ‘em.
Besides, I personally think having a bit of a ‘filter’ is good anyway; the scroll zombies at Reddit who’re siding with the admins sorta make me worry about this place getting too big.
One of the few small communities I’ll be sad to lose is HyruleEngineering. Can’t believe Reddit decided to shit the bed right when I found it.
It’s a shame, but any sort of number-based system will most likely end up with the same problems as karma. Not having the numbers add up is a good start though, since upvotes and downvotes are only really useful as ‘in-the-moment’ indicators of good vs bad content.
Let’s keep it how it is, so that we don’t have another social credits system that doubles as a dopamine factory.
Unlike that exodus, the Lemmigration isn’t for censorship and freedom of speech issues (inevitably drawing in the most toxic, bigoted and hateful section of Reddit to voat); it’s because of reduced accessibility and usability, alongside the visible contempt that Reddit’s administration has for their users (free content providers) and moderators (free content curators).
This means the people fleeing Reddit’s shores aren’t doing so because they want to recreate fatpeoplehate elsewhere; it’s because Reddit won’t let blind people moderate their own communities.
If the copyright holder no longer provides a legal way to acquire any piece of media directly from them, making it so that the only way to acquire it legally is in a manner that prevents the copyright holder from seeing any profit, and the legal option is essentially a grift where you’re sometimes paying 100x the sticker value for something where the copyright holder won’t see a single cent…
