  • This is actually why I switched to xmpp for my chat server of about 200.

The room being the atomic unit, and automatic caching of media from rooms that any user is a member of, even rooms hosted on other servers was too much of a legal liability.

It became even worse when the CSAM users found my server that had open signups, but required a captcha and an email to signup.

Deleting the users, banning the rooms, and deleting the cached media became a multiple times a day chore.

Xmpp, so far, doesn’t have those issues. And it is so light on resources. I highly recommend the switch.

EDIT: the moderation tools on xmpp are also far superior.

  • Having an opinion on privacy is having an opinion on a political topic, and yet you cross posted this to the privacy … Sub-lemmy?

This will be a hyperbolic statement, but it is true, none the less.

Creating technology without consideration for how it is used inevitably helps bad people do horrible things. The person who devised the gas chambers for the Nazis should have considered it’s politics. Warner Von Braun cared about rocketry over anything else, to the point that he didn’t consider the politics and was happy to use slave labor to help him get to space.

  • Or, you can skip the unhinged rant, use monocles or dino, and a public server.

Also, hosting a server is much simpler than something like matrix. You can host an xmpp server on a pi and that is more than enough. Or, just use a public server.

    So difficult.

I like how you included steps that absolutely aren’t required and haven’t been for like a decade to make your statement more hyperbolic.
