My problem with that is mobile. If I want tasks, I’ll use a dedicated primarily mobile app, (e.g. Tasks.org) because if I’m checking a grocery list or tweaking my daily todo list while out of the house, I’m not gonna pull out my laptop lol

Of course it seems reasonable for more long-term plans which you don’t need to change day-to-day, but at that point I’d just end up with two to do lists/apps which is also a bother.

I’d encourage use of StreetComplete, you can walk around your local area and get lots of points to survey with data on street widths or businesses’ opening times. Imagine if all the people who were busy with Pokemon Go used that, OpenStreetMap would be nigh perfect in terms of data.

In my experience not just sometimes, but rather commonly. It often feels like the native Linux version, if it is even available, gets far fewer bug fixes - not like I can blame them, considering the far lower amount of Linux players, but sometimes I wonder why they even bother with it in the first place if they don’t want to bother with focusing on it, with how good Proton is.

It’s likely a difference of emotion compared to logic. Emotionally they’d think “Damn it, now we need to check for such a weird specific edge-case, this is so annoying” while logically knowing it’s better the tester caught it.

One thing I’ve found to be useful is just having my browser clear all cookies upon closing. It’s initially annoying while you set up all your exceptions for commonly used sites so you don’t need to log in again there every time, but afterwards you don’t need to worry too much, because once you close your browser, all the useless cookies are gone.

Well, flexbox and grid have different purposes in my opinion/experience. Personally I use grid for “top level” layouts like the layout of the whole site, while I tend to prefer flexbox for layouts inside the grid. Of course that’s just a rule of thumb, there are absolutely cases where this isn’t the best option.

I know you meant this sarcastically, but yes, flex is a good option for centering something. Either that or setting the left and right margins of the element to auto, which is generally even easier.

Basically, if you’re in a flex container use flex, if you’re in a grid use grid, and if neither of those apply set the left and right margins to auto.

Wait, it doesn’t support caldav? That really kills the appeal of the convenience they provide as a one-stop-shop, as I’d have to deal with hosting my calendars in another way. I guess at that point I could just get SimpleLogin and use the rest as I have it, even if that gets close to proton unlimited price-wise…

As I mentioned in the post, my money budget is around 1000€ as a target, but it extends both up and down. I can stretch if needed, but if that’s comically overkill then I’d be happy to go lower. Time budget… not too high, but also not super low. I can certainly spend a day or two setting everything up. Electricity costs are certainly a factor, power prices here were some of the highest globally, even before the extreme increases lately.

Also thanks for the tip of the S3 backup, it’s probably a good idea to have an extra copy of important data off-site, yeah.

I use my computer normally, but importantly for ergo keyboards, I also play video games. Due to that, initially I looked into ZSA with their Moonlander, as it seemed to fulfill the role of being ergonomic, while having enough keys to let me comfortably game. As usual, a compromise solved neither issue. Due to neither being overly comfortable, nor being satisfactory for gaming, I ended up selling it. I’m now on a Piantor Pro and so far it’s pretty decent, while keeping my old traditional keyboard around for games. It’s not perfect, but if you play games and want an ergo keyboard there doesn’t seem to be anything that truly is.

I was considering the VPN option, but as you mentioned for game servers that’s not reasonable, and for some of the collaborative tools I’d prefer being able to give people I don’t trust that much access, for instance people at work/university, to work together with them on whatever would be needed.

If I just decided to make the home server a home-only server, that would ease a lot of my worries. I guess I could get a personal one, with sensitive info but only home network access, and just rent a second one? It’s not like they’re that expensive if you’re just doing small-scale things and find a decent provider

You know, Valve once considered making an entire OS to prevent cheating. I’d assume something like SteamOS, but incredibly locked down and designed for playing Valve games. Obviously that never got past the idea stage, but disregarding the truckload of issues with that idea, one big one is that you could use either physical cheating tools, by messing with the direct hardware inputs, or run it in a VM. Basically, unless you have a player in a locked-off room, with a pc, keyboard, and mouse provided by you, and the pc running your own locked-down OS… well, someone’s gonna figure out a way to cheat.

That’s not to say that anticheat can be ignored entirely, but since there is no remotely reasonable state which could eradicate cheating entirely, you need to find a happy medium of not “infecting” the player’s pc with a new backdoor, because even if you’re not malicious, someone else will be, and nothing at all. Something that has a minimum level of invasiveness with a maximum level of cheating prevention, at least filtering out basic script kiddies.

The problem with that is, nobody cares. Basically nobody even knows what a “Kernel” is and what “Kernel-level” means and implies, so it’s just some weird anticheat for them. Also, as long as DRM doesn’t interfere with their playing experience, they don’t care either. Barely anyone will even notice if a few frames are missing, because Denuvo is chilling in the background, keeping the game “safe”.

We are a subset of privacy-minded people in a subset of somewhat knowledgeable gamers. Losing us as customers doesn’t matter in the slightest to the devs/publishers, and nobody else will make a fuss, or at least they’ll not stop spending money.

Of course I can’t entirely generalize from this, however my 2080Ti worked perfectly out of the box on EndeavourOS. Game performance is also mostly similar to my Windows install - if they ran well, they still do, and if they ran badly, then the same goes for that as well.

What I'd be more worried about personally is metadata. Sure, they might not know what you sent, but they know who you sent it to and when. The data is generally just gonna be "Oh, this person texts their mum every morning", but Meta already provided message contents in an abortion case, so what if someone is accused of having an abortion (the fact that you can be "accused" of that now in the US is still fucked up imo, but that's besides the point) and then Meta provides info that this teenager sent WhatsApp messages to a medical professional who can perform abortions. That would obviously not work as well as the contents themselves, but it does have value to the legal case.

In the end none of us have anything to hide… until we suddenly do

I know this wasn't argued here, but I'd like to make it clear anyways: You don't have to deal drugs or be a hired killer to want privacy. There are a bunch of reasons you could get in trouble with the government which fall into morally ambiguous areas. And sometimes we just don't want our entire life being analyzed to have an algorithm decide what advertisement is the most effective in getting us to click on it.

I think for now I’ll get a Moonlander, or at least something similar, and in the (very) long run, if I’m not satisfied or it doesn’t suit all my needs, invest in a soldering kit and a 3D printer to start testing out more and more smaller diy style keyboards (depending on how many I’ll test that’s probably cheaper, tinkering is fun, and I’ll probably find other uses for those as well) to see what fits me best, or what I could use as a secondary option.

But for now, I’ll just get a nice base that will certainly work. Experimentation comes later. Thank you all. I’ll be sure to at least have a good look at all the keyboards recommended here, and make a list of my favorite ones for long-term experimentation, but at the time I just don’t quite have the money for more than one keyboard, even if many of them seem very cool (；・∀・)
