Hey, before I accepted there was no hope, I was pushing for such things. I’m far from special in that. Inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist.

And if there were a serious movement that was advocating doing more than peacefully protesting a cow statue on Wall Street as the planet and species enemies laughed out their windows above them, I’ll be there with bells on, as I imagine most current doomers would.

But the sun will sooner set in the east, and doing such things alone is just suicide with extra steps and just as helpful.

This is what I think of when the optimists still think they can save humanity from its own greedy, short sighted, self-destructive nature as the world literally begins to burn by our own hands after a century of warning:

We’re monkeys that are just smart enough to develop technologies we are still too bone dead stupid to wield responsibly. Unless we accidentally create a benevolent, hyperintelligent AGI in our pursuit of yet another tool for manipulation and greed that saves us from our own nature, extremely unlikely, this only ends one way. We are who we are and the tools we’ve fashioned have become dangerous enough to crush us under the weight of their capability, without one iota of temperance aka “maybe growth/metastasis should stop being our only goal” by anyone in power.

And somewhat ironically, the “our species can still turn it around! live in hope!” types are the same ones deadset against revolution to force those living large off destroying the planet to stop in a physical way. Something something cake, something something eat it too. This ain’t a movie, for humanity to have a future, we’d need to starve this and the next couple generations and tear down the polluting supply chains to live with nature again (like all those humans that did live with nature until they were genocided so someone with a flag could steal the resources under their feet) and bring our species down from the overpopulation cancer we’ve become, but we won’t entertain the reality that we can’t support 8 billion people sustainably, we made a dire mistake attempting to, and the species needs to drastically, painfully downsize to have any future at all. So we will burn in the Earth’s fever until homeostasis is restored.

But by all means, keep trying to eat that cotton candy. I just hope it makes you happy doing it so it isn’t entirely without a point.

I think such protections have to happen BEFORE the market capitalists are able to use their immense hoards of power, that’s what capital is at scale, to capture their own governments and regulators that were supposed to act as a firewall protecting regular citizens from them, as the market capitalists have in the United States for almost half a century.

Once that happens. Good fucking luck. Greed doesn’t let go of what it acquires.

No easier group to scapegoat than one that is literally defined by its complete lack of resources.

Our perpetually massive homeless population is probably part of the slippery slope that eased today’s conservatives into thumping their chest and openly hating and wishing harm on everyone who isn’t them loudly and proudly without so much as a dog whistle.

This but also those homeless encampments that should make you feel ashamed to be an American for letting your fellow citizens die of exposure, but you get angry at for “lowering local property values”

How dare they try to get in the way of corporate profits in a desperate attempt to save the human habitability of Earth from humanity!

3 months out! Don’t you get it? All that matters is the next quarter. Humanity can burn and die after I see how much I l’ve won this quarter at the exploitation casino! A society grows great when old men burn the trees they sit under and tell the crying children to get their own planet to burn.

You fit exiled in the forest by all three.

The downside from what I’ve observed is that many organizations correctly believe that they can pollute with abandon and put out the public relations pushback with the promise of trees.

It sends a problem solved message. Yes, plant trees, trees are awesome. Trees won’t save us from those emissions though.

I’ll be honest, I’ve always been dubious of the idea that we can pump all the carbon shit into the air we want if we just plant enough trees to eat it. It sounds like a dodge, akin to clean coal.

Maybe start from stop pumping all this carbon shit into the air, and take the commensurate lifestyle changes as the cost of our species surviving.

That said, it’s extremely clear the long term survival of humanity on our only habitat isn’t a priority for humanity.

If the owners want me to believe technology can solve the climate problem that is caused by their greed so their greed can continue destroying civilization socially unabated, they need to stop selling climate action policy snake oil to world governments for a quick buck.

And also maybe stop forcing workers who can work at a computer at home to drive into work to maintain the capital value of your commercial real estate as you bark orders from the luxury resort tour that is your life.

Until then, we know not living lives powered by burning ridiculous quantities of dead flora/fauna juice wouldn’t further destabilize our only, increasingly uncomfortably hot habitat. We also know that simply stopping won’t reverse the damage already done on a time scale humans can perceive.

We are literally turning the habitat of any future humans into 🔥Hell🔥. And if we couldn’t make it work here, on easy mode, with enough pre-existing water/air/waste recycling to support millions to billions sustainably, we certainly aren’t going to thrive on worlds where a single mistake means oops, everybody dead instantly try again. Im glad of that honestly, as the idea of growing/metastasizing into space and exploiting new world’s resources almost makes dollar signs pop out of billionaire’s eye sockets, and if thats the core reason they’re so eager for us to spread out there, may we die on the vine.
