Firstly, they de-valued upvotes and the equality that every user’s opinion had before they were introduced.
And secondly, they were so abundant that they didn’t mean anything anyway.

    I like how it was originally when there was only gold. It actually meant something, if a comment or post had gold that meant it must be special. Now with all the random nonsense on every single post it’s become completely meaningless clutter.

    I would not be opposed to adding a feature like reddit gold awards to Lemmy/Kbin. Seems like a fun way to maybe relieve some server costs as well, if the revenue goes to the instance owner.
