A short while ago I asked about a youtube alternative. While I was happy to try odyssey a small subset of commenters here were fairly cynical that any solution could be developed that could challenge a big company like YT and some even suggested just paying google.
This is the original question: https://lemmy.myserv.one/post/3116340
I am now happy to learn that in fact a solution has been developed which I will be trying. In fact it is presented in a YT video: https://youtu.be/5DePDzfyWkw?si=eMGHNGsxICcLmFOW
It warms my heart to see that solutions you difficult problems can be found and that we as thinking people and as humans still have the ultimate ability to change the course of the ship. I will be giving this new video app a try that similar to the messenger apps looks like it has a chance to begin the slow eroding of a single entity having all the content. Many years I am sure but feel like my question was answered even if not on Lemmy.
Thanks everyone:)
For others interested but who prefer not to watch a yt video to find out, care to share the name of the app or project?
OP posted a Louis Rossman video talking about Grayjay: https://grayjay.app
Source code: https://gitlab.futo.org/videostreaming/grayjay
Piped link for Louis video: https://piped.video/watch?v=5DePDzfyWkw
I just downloaded and set it up and it works fantastically well
How does this work? does it pass adverts through from YouTube or strip then?
I am a big supporter of FUTO, the company respects your privacy. I think the concept of taking on nascent projects then funding and assisting in developing them, is the change that we need in open source app development right now. For those who didn’t read the post by Jasep, look up Louise Rossman on
YouTubeGrayjay, the guy is a big inspiration.Anyone have any opinions on this Louis Rossman fellow? I’m unfamiliar with him. His comments section implies he’s a decent guy though. That accurate?
He’s extremely well known in the right to repair community. His “day job” is running a repair service for laptops and phones, mainly Apple devices, and he has always been at the forefront of trying to keep Apple in check as much as one person can be. To say he’s a decent guy is an understatement.
Seconded. One of a literal handful of YouTubers I can even stand, doing God’s work.
Is it possible to have your web browser use VLC for videos? Will it play YT video?
I have it on both my PC and phone. Maybe it works on one but not the other?
Will it find a way to monetize and offset running costs, or will it not gain traction like the dozens before it?
