Well, it seemed from your comment that you just expected this to work without tinkering. However, now you admit to be tinkering? This is a rather confusing story. When I’m tinkering, I’m exploring and expecting to run into edge cases or unsupported environments. Linux may be great, but it’s just a kernel with GNU on top to help build the larger OS. I believe the attitude towards linux is a bit misguided. It is a great tool, and its strengths mainly lie in the freedom of usage that allows for both fine-tune control and automatibility. I say windows and MacOS are strictly non automatable environments unless you venture into the developer side, and that will undoubtedly bring some with it some problems. As such, many systems that require the user to be more hands off and operate with high uptime will use Linux kernels. Being able to automate the process with minimal user input is essential in the performance and reliability of critical systems demand.

Again, I did not wish to be condemning your actions and rather alert you to the differing problems these tools are made to solve. MacOs and thereby its hardware was geared towards being an apple only product that is only properly supported by apple, and the problem it solves is to be a tool for rich and self-conscious individuals.

Windows was created to be a home and enterprise OS that can be used in almost any system that is quite an outstanding feat, but it really is because of the number of developers and users offer the ability for things to work. Mind you that even Windows was not made to be extremely automatable. yet there are tools being created to offer automating tasks, but many are closed source and tied to requiring funding. I even ran into some odd issues every once in a while.

Linux was expressly made to be a minimal system that offered high uptime and high automatibility that was free for everyone to contribute or use. This allows users and admins to set up their systems to be more hands-off when it came to tasks that were extremely time-consuming or continually have to be worked on without deadline while keeping costs low. It is just recently that Linux-based distributions are able to make use of features and packages that are geared to users who need to make manual tasks. Wayland is finally being more stable, driver support from large manufacturers, and even emulation of Windows APIs with use of proton/wine is getting better. Thus offering users the ability to do manual tasks and mix custom made automated scripts/tools into their environments.

Many see the hype and equate it to being able to use Linux systems like they did with the very much well funded manual systems that Windows and MacOS offered. Instead, Linux is just a tool and can be useful when it is needed.

You tried to install a non apple approved software(being the entire OS) on a Mac system. Imagine how hard it is for linux developers to support this blackbox hardware configuration?

Try using something actually easier to program/use for running linux type OSes. I usually will suggest AMD.

If you need a strong graphics card on a laptop, I think those frameworks will be more than capable of offering that kind of flexibility. The potential of packing it up so that if you feel like the power-hungry gpu will take too much battery, then it can be flexible in allowing you to remove the gpu without thinking about a screwdriver

If you need ARM, then you should be mindful of the fact that the arm ecosystem is still quite new for pc users. There are not many software choices, but it does show some promise.

If you think you need Mac hardware, then you don’t need to go around throwing linux on it. MacOS is already Unix like. You are going to live with the fact that no one outside of apple will have proper hardware support at the OS level. Let alone driver support.

Yes, but I usually add my public key to the authorized_keys file and turn off password authentication once i do login with a password. On top of that, I have a sshpass one line command that takes care of this for me. It’s much easier than trying to manually type a password for the next time. I save it and just run it every time I think about using password login. Next time I need to ssh, I know the password login is not necessary.

At the next reboot, your system will now only accept key logins, except for root. I hope the root user password is secure. I don’t require it for root because if a hacker does gain shell access, a password(or priv esc exploit) is all they need to gain root shell. It is also a safety net in case you need to login and lost your private key.

I can see a folding phone being useful in this situation, but they are mostly a nightmare to repair, have debatable water resistance, are expensive, and have closed proprietary software.

Also a lot of enterprise equipment runs on some kind of Linux and may also inflate the numbers. Linux will always be around, it’s windows and Mac os that need their parent companies to survive

At some point, i did what you said and stopped judging the kid for how they are. It was mostly from the sadness of knowing the world they will have to explore, as adults, a world that will be extremely competitive and aggressive. I wanted to shield them from it all and make them live a stable, happy life. At least until they start becoming more independent. Eventually, we all have to let them live their own life.

OK, I understand your idea. However, I will have to throw some cold water on you. You did a market analysis, and you saw the margins for low-end gaming PCs were too high. However, what you didn’t do is market analysis on the clients. You half ased it and got burned. From my experience, customers do not do much research or think logically about what they spend their money on. It’s true that people will most likely make bad financial decisions. They will see your lower priced PCs and overthink it. They will believe that the lower priced stuff is also lower quality and a worse deal. There is a range in which they believe a PC should cost, and by undercutting the competition, you estranged your client base. On the other hand, presentation and words matter a lot to people and the algorithms(search engine optimizers). They don’t care about acronyms or technical words. If you look at how Apple and other giant tech brands marker their technology, you will find that specs take a back seat. On the flip side, the experience and capabilities take center stage. Making your clients feel welcomed and meeting their desires without accidentally coming off as “cheap garbage” is a tricky balancing act.

If you don’t want to do this type of marketing and selling, then just make the PCs work for you instead.

Maybe don’t try to market them as gaming PCs and just market them as great workstation PCs. Also, it depends on the market and your inventory imports. If your market is people who can afford current Gen laptops, they will not like your PCs. If you market them as home theater media streaming PCs for those who want something better than a firestick, then it will make a better selling point. Either way, if you have a steady supply of these low-end PCs, then think about multiple markets instead of limiting your client base to just cheap gaming PCs. There is so much more a computer can be. Do some market research on your local or online markets and make the PCs capable of solving their needs.

The amount of money you can gain from renting out your equipment vs. the electrical cost is not worth the effort you will need to employ to make this work. Especially for these entry-level spec computers. The best way to monetize is to liquidate them into cash and churn that cash into something more profitable, which is not easy, but it works for those who are creative and passionate enough. Another method is to make them do tasks that frees up your time, or you can delegate tasks that will help you. Good luck on your monetization efforts

It’s not a virus, it’s a Potentially Unwanted Programs bundled and it’s common Spyware, Adware, and miscellaneous paid to serve programs. Since windows and macs bundle their own types of potentially unwanted programs, I like to consider this as just larger corporations being hypocritical. Unfortunately, the majority of PUP that get flagged are typically worse than what these larger corporations bundle in their installers or products.

Yep, as always, spinning up a vm of Linux is just so easy and plenty of ways to recover from a bad moment with snapshots and zfs, or easily restart from a fresh premade image. Also, since you can run the vpn on the host, you can make the vpn connection not have to be limited by the vm performance/limited resources and you don’t need to worry of there being a leak of information to the internet about your system or any identifiable info.

Hmm I don't listen to music much. Like almost never as they get stuck in a loop in my head that I can't sleep at night or get headaches. I don't know why and I just isolate myself. I never bothered trying to get help with it as it only seems to happen when I listen to music a lot vs once or twice every so often.

And then eventually all the Chinese beers will get vpns or whatever to mask their ip and country of origin, thereby defeating the whole purpose and creating more cpu usage to lookup the blocks for every connection… if it's very dumb things to do, it doesn't solve the problem at hand. I don't know how to solve it but one day there will be a client that someone will make that will.
