That article seems incredible naive when it comes to Threads and ActivityPub.

I don't think its naiv. I think its more realistic. I like most about the article that it puts the activitypub-protocol front and center. This is mainly what made me view the fediverse differently. And that therefore power dynamics will probably shift in the next years away from Mastodon.

Firefox has a fully local translation service built in these days that works quite well with German.
On iOS at least, you can just tap the translate button.
The article is basically just a long unsubstantiated rant though.
