About a month ago, I made a post about the Amazon series Upload. It turns out a surprising number of you had actually watched the show. So for those people, I want to let you know season 3 will start on October 20.

That’s right, they cancelled The Peripheral but we’re getting more Upload.

The complaints in the previous thread are legit: it’s mostly a romcom, and there’s lots of missed potential, but the important part is that it’s a cyberpunk romantic comedy.

It isn’t perfect, but it covers the interesting topics: inequality, the growing power of rich corporate owners, the commodification of life.

Perhaps the best part is that it does all that without black leather, chrome, or mirrorshades.

I didn’t really get the complaints. The trailers made it pretty clear that the romcom thing is a part of the show. I like a lot of different sci-fi, but I could tell even before I watched the show that I could get people I know that don’t like sci-fi to watch this.

Now… if they rolled out a Scary Mary trailer we’d all be having a different conversation.

Pretty sure Upload filmed quite some time ago, it was probably better calculus to just finish editing and SFX work and release it, vs Peripheral being to early in production and delayed indefinitely by the strikes.

I mean, I’d rather have both, but I can see the potential logic.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The Flash vet Robbie Amell stars as computer programmer Nathan, who dies unexpectedly and finds himself in one of these digital afterlives at the expensive Lakeview, where he falls for his customer service “angel” Nora (Chicago Fire‘s Andy Allo).

The cast also includes Kevin Bigley (Sirens), Allegra Edwards (Briarpatch), Zainab Johnson (American Koko), Owen Daniels (Space Force), Andrea Rosen (Episodes) and Josh Banday.

As Season 2 wrapped with Nathan experiencing a worrisome nosebleed after he “downloaded” to break into Freeyond.

Season 3 picks back up with Nora and freshly downloaded Nathan as they navigate their relationship, while racing to stop the mysterious conspiracy that threatens to destroy millions of lives.

And back in the real world, Aleesha rises through the ranks of Horizen by managing AI education, and falls into a new romantic relationship.

And Luke, all alone in Lakeview, is forced to come up with the funds to pay for his stay in paradise, driving him to work in The Grey Zone.
