I feel like a version of this guide gets reposted weekly, but it’s always out of date.

u/theFallenWalnut over on that other site updates these regularly.

They also now link to !purchasewithpurpose@lemmy.world but I don’t see anything posted there. Maybe a better place to start reposting these

Thank you. To be honest I don’t have time for self hosting, I’d prefer a commercial service. Ideally a service that offers mail, calendar and some kind of remote drive too.

I’m just using Nextcloud’s Memories app. I prefer to keep my photo backups in the same place as everything else in my cloud storage anyway, so it works nicely

Seconded. Its a great experience, my only complains is that photo synchronization with my phone isn’t stellar. Best solution I’ve found thus far is a proprietary app called FolderSync

Interesting, maybe I should look for a next cloud provider that offers email too

For mail, there’s also Disroot, free, based in tbe Netherlands. Not as much free storage as the mainstream providers, but it does let you send incripted mails, and unlike Tuta and Proton, they let you use a client like Thunderbird!

Obligatory (though not asked for or even mentioned) Any VPN -> Mullvad (Proton VPN uses Mullvad as a backend)

Once question I have as Firefox seems to be playing with fire is what is a good alternative for Firefox relay that isn’t iCloud?

Kagi is actively funding the Russian government as they use, and pay for, their search provider Yandex. It’s not the only one they are using, but it’s one of them.

Fastmail is Australia based. They have atrocious privacy laws.

I love protonmail. I will keep on using protonmail. No matter how many times people bring this up I will continue using it. I do not care about politics on the other side of the globe, and I’m not jobless enough to censure everything I use because of my political opinions, or the opinions of those who create the products I use. The Lemmy community has an insane tendency to bring up events that may be deemed as a “bad move” in order to completely blacklist it for moral grandstanding. It’s happened to Hyprland, Ladybird, Protonmail, Brave and so many other pieces of software that are good on their own, but irrelevant and misconstrued information is somehow more important than the software itself. I guarantee that if you apply this logic to everything you use, you would be forced to revert to a hunter gatherer because nobody can fully agree with anyone else.

Volkswagen and Ford had people running the company who supported Nazis, Linux has code from maintainers from Russia, almost all gadgets on this planet have cobalt from slave mines in the Congo. But nobody goes around saying that you can’t drive cars, or use Linux, or use a phone, because truthfully you don’t believe in this logic, you are just using it in order to claim moral superiority and get upvotes. My computer will continue running Hyprland, I will continue supporting Ladybird, I will continue using Protonmail and I will continue to push back against these attitudes hellbent on distorting everything that makes FOSS and adjacent services so good.

Just be thankful that I’m not running gmail.

If you don’t care about America’s decline into fascism, why are you even in this community? Why not just continue happily using Google products and other American tech?

But honestly, “I do not care about politics on the other side of the globe, and I’m not jobless enough to censure everything” is such an incredibly shitty entitled attitude to have. You should care. Not caring is not something to proudly trumpet out to the world. It makes you look selfish and wilfully ignorant.

Whether you believe certain specific responses to any given issue are actually productive and worth the trade-off is an entirely separate matter. If you’re gonna continue using Proton because you can’t find anything as good as it to switch to, or because you don’t think the CEO’s comments were bad enough to warrant cancellation, or even that the switching cost would be too high relative to how much impact it would have, I wouldn’t blame you. There are certainly American products that I continue to use because the benefit they provide me outweighs how much impact I think switching could have.

But a blanket statement that you don’t care about the most powerful country in the world losing all semblance of rule of law? Jesus fucking Christ dude. Could you show a little humanity?

Also, the politics of the current world empire will affect us all, no matter if you live in Mali, Malta or Malaysia.

I live in Germany and we are also currently sliding into authorianizm. The US politics defintly play a role as catalyzator.

What a strawman. There are many reasons to not use Google products that have nothing to do with Google being in the USA.

I get what you’re saying but putting “Volkswagen had actual Nazis” and “some Linux coders are from Russia, the largest country in the world” next to each other reads a bit funny lol

No problem if you like proton mail. I just want people to be aware of possible issues to make inform choices when they choose services.

You get a lot of cool shit as a Vivaldi user. I have a free 10 GB email address there, free Mastodon account (not that it cost money to begin with, but they have their own mastodon instance for all their users), and just a couple of days ago they introduced free VPN protection through ProtonVPN. It’s mostly an ad campaign as you can’t select country when connecting to it, but you are tunneled through a vpn that’s closest to you out of the “free pool”. I suppose if blogging is your passion they have free blogging space as well, so yeah, lots of reasons to like Vivaldi.
But! When manifest v3 gets enforced come June and Vivaldi’s adblocker can’t perform to the same standard as uBlock Origin, maybe the Vivaldi browser is a dead end?
